辽宁省朝阳市建平县2018-2019学年八年级下学期英语期中测试卷(含听力音频)

根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

When you wave to a friend, you are using body language. When you smile at someone, you mean to be friendly. When you put one finger in front of your mouth, you mean "be quiet". Yet, people in different countries may use different body languages.

Once, an Englishman was in Italy. He could speak little Italian. One day while he was walking in the street, he felt hungry and went into a restaurant. When the waiter came, the Englishman opened his mouth, put his fingers into it and took them out again and moved his lips. In this way, he meant to say, "Bring me something to eat." But the waiter brought him a lot of things to drink, first tea, then coffee, then milk, but no food.

The Englishman was sorry that he was not able to tell the waiter he was hungry. He was ready to leave the restaurant when another man came in. The man put his hands on his stomach, and this body language was good enough for the waiter. In a few minutes, the waiter brought him a large plate of bread and meat.

Finally the Englishman had his meal in the same way.

(1)、How many persons were mentioned in this story?
(2)、What do you mean if you put one finger in front of your mouth?
(3)、Why did the Englishman feel sorry at first?
(4)、Did the Englishman have the meal finally?
(5)、What body language can you use if you want to show you're friendly?

Square dancing has been popular for quite a few years.  Its lovers believe it is good for elderly people's health But in recent years, it has many haters as well. They think too loud music or dancing too late into night influences people's life. Should square dancing be supported or limited? Here are opinions from two groups of people.

For

Square dancing is a helpful way for elderly people to stay fit.

Square dancing has become an important socializing opportunity(社交机会) for those parents whose grown children have left to start their own families.

If governments provide large places where people can dance a bit far from living blocks, most of the complaints will go away.

Against

Square dancing in public may not be acceptable to all elderly people. Some of them hate the noise caused by such kind of dancing.

Square dancing is something that elderly people themselves invented. They just want to be left by themselves to do what they like.

There are some other healthier ways to exercise for people from different age groups and with different health .situations. Square dancing is not a good idea for everyone.

I was coming back home late at night in a ”Sharing” minivan. In Hyderabad, India, it is a cheap and quick means of transport. The van drivers ply (揽客) as many as 13 people at times in a vehicle which is designed for the transport of 8 people. Our van was crowded as well. People were getting off and on at many places.

On the journey, one girl waved her hand to ask the driver to stop. While getting down, she tripped and fell.None of us notice it,as it was dark. The driver was waiting for her to pay. It was then that we saw the girl was on her knees by the side of the road. Another passenger and l got down and held her up.

Even in pain, the girl held up a note and asked us to pay the driver. The other passenger took the note and paid the driver. My stop was a few hundred meters away. I decided to stay with her till she was fine. I paid the driver for myself and he took off with the other passengers.

I neither knew her nor did I know what to do, but I was there, saying some comforting words to a stranger in pain. I asked her to stand still for a few minutes. We then looked for a place for her to sit. From out of nowhere, her friend joined us.

We made her sit in a nearby grassland and her friend rushed to get a taxi. In the meantime, she examined her leg and her ankle had swollen up (肿胀). It looked like a sprain (扭伤). Once her friend came back, they took the taxi and rushed to a hospital. Before they left, the girl thanked me and said they could manage as it was only a small sprain.

I do not know if I did enough. But I feel I gave some comfort to her in a small way.

根据短文内容,完成下列小题。

On 19th September 1783, Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, sent the first hot air balloon. The passengers were three animals and the balloon stayed in the air for about 15 minutes before hitting back to the ground.

The first manned(载人的) flight was about 2 months later, with a balloon made by 2 French brothers. The balloon flew for a period of 20 minutes.

Sailing through the sky in the balloon, high above buildings and trees, you can't feel or hear the wind because you're traveling in the same direction and at the same speed as it is.

A hot air balloon has three main parts: the balloon, called an envelope; a basket, where passengers ride; and a burner system, which supplies the hot air.

Most balloon envelopes are made of strong, lightweight nylon(尼龙). They are different in size and shape, but they have to be really, really big to lift even one person. Most weigh more than an adult man.

The basket is usually made of wicker(柳条), which is strong but not too hard. It needs to bend a bit for a soft landing, just like a good jumper bends her legs instead of keeping them straight when she lands.

The hot air balloon works on the theory that hot air rises faster than cooler air. When the burner system is turned on, it makes a noisy sound, but once the balloon is flying, the burner can be turned off. The air in the envelope will then cool, and the balloon will slowly go down unless the pilot starts the burner system again.

To control a hot air balloon, a pilot adds hot air to it to go up or lets the air out to go down until he finds a wind blowing in the direction he wants to fly. But no matter which way the wind blows, the passengers have an amazing bird's-eye view of the world.
