Long, long ago the world was a happy place. Nobody was ever sick or sad.

    At that time there lived a little girl named Pandora. One day a fairy gave her a wonderful box. The fairy made Pandora promise not to open it. Pandora and her friends often looked at the box and wondered what was in it.

    For a long time Pandora kept her promise, but at last she couldn't help herself. She opened the box a little. Then hundreds of bad fairies flew out. They stung (刺伤) Pandora and her friends. The bad fairies flew out of the door and stung all the children in the land. Then Pandora heard a voice crying, “Let me out, and I will help you.”

    She opened the box again, and a beautiful fairy flew out. She told Pandora that her name was Hope. She kissed Pandora and her friends, and made them feel well. Then she flew away to help the other children.

    Until now, when people are sick or unhappy, the little good fairy, Hope, comes to comfort them.

One day, five blind men were walking along, when suddenly they bumped into something very big in front of them. Each one put out his hand and touched it. The first man thought it was a tree —it was tall and round. The second man felt something tall and wide and rough(粗糙的) and said, “Aha! This must be a wall !” The third man touched a very long smooth thing. He guessed this was a spear (矛).Then the fourth man said, “I feel cool. There must be a fan up there. Oh, yes! Here it is!” He touched something big and round that was moving. What did the fifth man find? Well, he started shouting that he was being chased(追赶) by a snake.

    Each man was sure he knew what he had touched, but they were wrong. They finally understood the mystery when the big thing attempted （尝试）to move, and they felt silly because everything they had touched belonged to an elephant.

    My name is Sam. I joined a club called "passing help" last month. Now let me tell you why I joined it.

    One evening this May, on my way home my old car broken down. It was 25 miles from my home. I wanted to get a ride(搭便车), but there was no car. It was also hard to take a taxi. I decided to take a bus home. I went to a bus stop nearby.

    After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. The bus driver was a young woman. She was kind and she told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes, but no bus came. At last a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver.

    "When I reached the bus station, I got to know that the bus to your town couldn't come, so I returned here. I just can't leave you here," she said, "Get in my car and l will take you back to your home."

    "It is a long way." I said.

    "Come on, sir," she said, "Let's go."

    On the way she told me a story. A few days ago，there wasn't gas(汽油)  in her car. An old man drove her up to a gas station and then back to her car.

    When we got to my home, I wanted to give her some money to thank her, but she didn't accept. "I only want to help others and do something nice for somebody. Pass it along." she said.

    You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Jane Addams. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?

    Jane Addams (1860-193)

    Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the pot and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community by supporting education and services for people in need in 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Rachel Carson (1907-1960)

    If it weren't for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects on humans and co the world's lakes and oceans.

    Rosa Parks (1913-2005)

    On December 1,1955,in Montgomery, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger .Her simple act brought a great change to the life of the black community in the US." The only tired I was, was tired of giving in, "said Parks.

    Sandra Day O'Connor (1930-now)

    Wan Sandra Day O' Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find weak at a law company because she was a woman. In 1981, she became the first woman to join the US .Supreme Court O'Connor gave the deciding choice in many important cases during her 24 years in bar field.
