Jane was from a small village in Southern America. Her family was poor and noodles were often their only food. Her parents couldn't afford to pay the electricity bill (电费), so she had to study by candle light.

What was worse, to live on, her parents moved to a faraway village with the other four children. As for Jane, she didn't want to give up learning and she dreamed to enter a famous university. She stuck to living alone in her village.

After Jane's parents left, she lived a really difficult life. Having no place to live in, the homeless girl had to sleep on the back seat of the school bus. Luckily, Mrs. Brown, the caring school bus driver, learned about Jane's situation and invited her to live with her family. Soon, Jane found a job in her school. She worked from 6 a. m. to 7:40 a. m. before the first school bell rang. She swept floors and picked up rubbish again in the afternoon. With the money she got from the work, she paid for her education. And she stayed up late in the evenings studying for all kinds of exams day after day.

Jane's hard work made a difference to her life. She finished high school with unexpected results. She was accepted by Harvard, one of the world's most famous universities with full scholarship (全额奖学金).

One morning, Wu Liang discovered that her classroom had changed. She found that the desks were no longer in rows, but pushed together to make eight bigger desks. She was too excited about it for the first two days and she couldn't listen to the teachers carefully. But soon she and her classmates got used to this new classroom arrangement (安排). ‘Now our class is quieter,' said Wu Liang. "What's more, we can come up with our own ideas and learn more through discussion. It's a better way to study."
Li Yu liked it, too. He said, "Group members first discuss, and then show ourselves in front of the whole class. It makes us believe in ourselves." It was part of a reform (改革) at Li's school. The school made this reform because they wanted to provide students with easier ways to study and more chances to discuss. "Our school hopes it can improve students'abilities (能力) to study by themselves and work in groups," said Zhang Ming, an English teacher.
However, the reform has demanded (要求) more from teachers. Now they have only 15 minutes to give the lesson which should be taught in 45 minutes before. It is difficult to teach in such a short time. The teachers have to find better ways to teach more effectively."The reform demands more, but I'm sure it is helpful,"added Zhang Ming.

Yao Ming, the center of the Chinese National Men's Basketball Team, served the Huston Rockets in NBA．The 2.26 m, 120 kg center（中锋） becomes the first one to come from a foreign team．
Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in September, 1980．His mother was a center and captain of the Chinese National Women's Team．His father played basketball, too．
Yao Ming is widely known in China．He came to be a very important basketball player in China Basketball Association （联赛）．It's short for CBA．During the 2000～2001 season, he did very well．He got 27.1 scores for the Shanghai Oriental （东方） Sharks in every match．
Yao Ming joined the Houston Rockets in November, 2002．He said this was a new start in his basketball life．He would do his best to learn from the NBA and improve himself．
Sport analyst （分析家） Bill Walton said, “Yao Ming has the potential （潜力）, the capability（能力） of changing the future of basketball．”

Steven Jobs, the designer of Apple Computer, was not clever when he was in school. At that time, he was not a good student and he always made troubles with his schoolmates. When he went into college, he didn't change a lot. Then he dropped out. But he was full of new ideas.
After he left college, Steven Jobs worked as a video game designer. He worked there for only several months and then he went to India. He hoped that the trip would give him some new ideas and give him a change in life.
Steven Jobs lived on a farm in California for a year after he returned from India.
In 1975, he began to make a new type of computer. He designed the Apple Computer with his friend in his garage. He chose the name "Apple" just because it could help him to remember a happy summer he once spent in an apple tree garden.
His Apple Computer was such a great success that Steven Jobs soon became famous all over the world.

     An old farmer lived with his little grandson. Every day the farmer got up early to read books.
    One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I want to read books just like you, but I don't understand them. What are the advantages of reading?” The grandfather said, “Take this litter basket to the river and bring me back a basket of water.” the boy did, but all the water leaked out（漏出）before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “ You'll have to walk faster next time.”
    This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. The boy said, “ See, Grandpa, it's useless（无用的）!”
“You think it is useless?” the old man said. “ Look at the basket.”
    The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he found that the basket was different. It was cleaner, inside and out.
   “That's what happens when you read books. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read them, you will be changed, inside and out.”

Alice Brown lives in New York with her mum and dad and two brothers, Tony and Peter. It is Alice's fourteen birthday next week. The family has got two dogs, a cat and four rabbits. Alice likes cats and rabbits but her brothers like dogs. Alice's dad works in a hotel. He's a hotel manager. Her mum teaches English at a junior high school.

Alice and her brothers study at the same school, but they are in different grades. She's in Grade Seven. Her brother Tony is in Grade Ten and Peter is in Grade Six. They live in a flat near the school. They walk to school together every day.

Alice is interested in computers. At home she plays computer games in her free time.

It was Mother's Day. John was so busy with his work that he couldn't go back home. When he passed by a flower shop in the evening, an idea came to his mind. "I'll send Mom some roses (玫瑰)."

While John was picking his flowers, a young man went inside. "How many roses can I get for only five dollars, Madam?" he asked. The assistant (店员) was trying to tell him roses were as expensive as forty dollars a dozen (一打). Maybe he would be happy with carnations (康乃馨).

"No, I have to have red roses." He said. "My mom was badly ill last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. Now I want to get something special, and it has to be roses, because roses are her favorite."

After hearing it, John said he would pay the rest (剩余)of the money for the young man. Moved (感动) by both of them, the assistant said, "Well, lovely young men, thirty dollars a dozen, only for you." Taking the roses, the young man almost jumped into the air and ran out of the shop. It was well worth (值得) twenty-five dollars John paid to see the exciting moment. Then John paid for his dozen of roses and told the assistant to send them to his mother.

When he walked out, he felt nice. Suddenly he saw the young man crossing the street and going into a park. But soon he realized it was not a park but a cemetery (坟墓). Crying, the young man carefully laid the roses, "Mom, oh, Mom, why didn't I tell you how much I loved you? God, please help me find my mum and tell her I love her."

Seeing this, John turned and quickly walked to the shop. He would take the flowers home himself.
