江苏省南京鼓楼区2019届九年级下学期英语中考一模试卷

阅读理解

The Internet influences the way we shop, how we communicate with each other, how we find answers to questions and much more. But for some time there have been concerns (担心) that the older people are being left behind because they are unable to use a computer.

However, this is changing and several charities and community groups now help older people to get online. Paul Robinson runs such charity, Seniors Online. Paul worked for an IT company before deciding to leave his well-paid job and start the charity. As he explains, "I used to spend a few hours a week helping some older people use the Internet at the local library and I could see the difference it made to their lives. It can be quite lonely for the elderly when their children move away to find work and start a family of their own. Learning how to use email and receive photographs of their children and grandchildren was a wonderful experience for them. And when I saw what a big influence it had on their lives, I left my job and set up Seniors Online. We run training courses so that older people can enjoy the same chances as us." away to find work and start a family of their own. Learning how to use email and receive photographs of their children and grandchildren was a wonderful experience for them. And when I saw what a big influence it had on their lives, I left my job and set up Seniors Online. We run training courses so that older people can enjoy the same chances as us. "

One of Paul's students is 89-year-old Betty, who had never used a computer in her life before she joined one of the classes. That was six months ago and Betty has now completed the course and received her "graduation" certificate (证书). "I joined a class so I could learn how to use email to keep in touch with members of my family," she says. "That's fantastic but the best thing of all is learning how to research my family history online. Using a computer is a bit scary (吓人的) to begin with because you think you'll do something terrible if you press the wrong key. But you soon learn that you can't really break anything—and the teachers are very patient. I think all people my age should do a course like this. "

According to a study in Nature Climate Change, the population of polar bears will be in serious drop by the year

2080. The cause is melting(融化) sea ice. Without ice, the bears must walk on the bank which is away from their main food source. That means the animals will be in danger because of lacking food.

" There's not enough food on land to support a polar bear population." Doctor Smith, the study's lead writer said. Lacking of food induces another problem. Mother bears may not be fat enough to produce milk for their babies. Some bear populations could stop having babies, leading to a rapid drop in numbers.

Arctic(北极) sea ice usually melts in the spring and summer, and then grows in the winter. But now, the ice is taking longer to grow back. Weather reports say the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. Ice here has reduced 13% every 10 years since the 1970s. The Arctic is home to about 25,000 polar bears. Scientists have known that the animals are in danger.

But the study also notes that it is still possible to slow Arctic melting. The world can reduce the burning of fossil fuels(石化燃料) and lower the greenhouse gas." Saving the polar bears is up to us, I believe that there is hope. But humans need to act quickly to turn that hope into a reality." Doctor Smith said.

Teens will finally grow up some day, leaving their parents and facing the challenges in life alone, so they should learn basic life skills and form good working habits.

The government has been trying to pay attention to the importance of hardworking spirit education(劳动教育). But this has been overlooked in recent years. Many teens do not value(看重) the importance of working hard. There is a teenager girl named Nancy. She never helps out around the house. Once her mother was on vacation for a week, leaving her alone at home. When her mother came home from vacation, she could not find a clean di sh or a clean shirt.

Schools play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hardworking spirit courses every week. To our joy(开心), some schools have provided each class with a piece of field to plant their favorite vegetables. For example, No.38 Middle School in Hefei, sets up a 500- square- meter farm on an open platform(露天平台) of their teaching building. Each class is asked to grow and pick vegetables there.

Parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Teens should master(掌握) one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms. The basic skills may help teens to solve the problems they will meet in the future.

 阅读下面的材料,从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中,选出最佳选项回答问题。

The first cellphone was invented fifty years ago. The man who built that phone, Martin Cooper, is now 94 years old. He has been called the "father of the cellphone".

In the early 1970s, Cooper worked for American technology company Motorola. At the time, Motorola and other companies were competing(竞争) to create cellphones. Cooper made the first public call with a handheld telephone in New York City on April 3, 1973. The device(设备), called Dyna -TAC, weighed about 1 kilogram and was 28 centimeters long.

He developed the phone with his team at Motorola for over five months. They could only talk on it for about 25 minutes. Cooper noted that such a call time was not a problem, because this phone was so heavy that you couldn't hold it up for 25 minutes. Cooper said, "The only thing that I was worried about: 'Is this thing going to work?' And it did. At the time, we had no way of knowing this was an important moment in history."

Today, the phone allows us to do many things. Cooper said the progress of cellphones is sure to continue long into the future. He thinks future phones will monitor our health at all times and batteries(电池) could even be replaced by human energy . He believes that one day, our phones might be small devices inside our ears.

Cooper has also expressed his worry. "We don't have any privacy(隐私) anymore because everything is now recorded someplace," Cooper said. However, he said hopefully that cellphones will continue to develop in ways that can greatly help humans.
