Leonardo da Vinci was a famous artist who was born in Italy. He was also a great inventor. Many of his inventions have become important in modern life. Although Leonardo hated war. he invented many different machines used for war. His most special invention was the machine gun, which was produced and used in war. Besides, Leonardo spent days thinking about how to save time. He developed ideas for something like cutting machines.

Leonardo was a strange man. He never ate meat. That was very unusual in those times. He never published(发表) discoveries about science. He usually used mirror writing, which looks like usual writing in a mirror, starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left side。

Only a few of his paintings are left today. Many paintings were not finished because he thought they were not perfect.

Leonardo was talented and creative. He was regarded as one of the most intelligent men in the world.

When the new term came. I had a new classmate, a little old lady with a warm smile. She said, "Hi, handsome! I'm Rose. I'm 1  years old. Can I give you a hug?" I was a little surprised to see such an old classmate. But I said heartily. "Of course!"

"Why are you  2   at such an age?" I asked. She laughed and joked, "I'm here to meet a husband, get married, have children, and then travel around. "

"No. 3  " I asked, "Tell me the truth. "

"I always dreamed of having a college education. Now I'm getting one!" she told me. 

Over the year, Rose became an icon(偶像). She  4  made friends wherever she went. She was very popular in the school

At the end of the term, we invited Rose to  5  at our school banquet(宴会). I will never 6  what she taught us.

Dame Daphne Sheldrick did a great job -she protected and returned orphaned (孤儿的) elephant babies to the wild. In 1977, Sheldrick and her team David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust began to save and raise hundreds of orphaned elephant babies in Kenya. Here is what she shared with us in an interview. 

Question: Can you tell us about your first interaction (互动) with an elephant?

Sheldrick: My first close interaction with elephants was that with my husband's two elephant orphans. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Question: Why did you set up David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust?

Sheldrick: {#blank#}2{#/blank#}David was, at the time, the finest wildlife warden (看守人) in Africa. After my husband died, there were many orphaned elephant babies that needed to be saved, so I came to help. That is how it all began.

Sheldrick: The orphans often come back to see their human family and the other orphans... Elephants never forget. They love their keepers for life.
