Frank was a very talkative little boy. He never saw a new thing without asking a great many questions about it.

His mother was very patient and kind. When it was proper to answer his questions, she would do so. Sometimes she would say, "You are not old enough to understand that, my son. When you are ten years old, you may ask me about it, and I will tell you." When his mother said this, Frank never bother(烦扰)her any more. He knew she always liked to answer him when he asked proper questions.

The first time Frank saw an hourglass, he was very much interested, but he did not know what it was. His mother said, "An hourglass is made in the shape of the figure 8. The sand is put in at one end and runs through a small hole in the middle. As much sand is put into the glass as will run through in an hour."

Frank watched the little stream of sand. He was impatient, because it would not run faster. "Let me shake it, mother," said he, "it is lazy, and will never get through."

"Oh, yes, it will, my son," said his mother, "The sand moves by little and little, but it moves all the time. When you look at the hands of the clock, you think they go very slowly, and so they do, but they never stop. While you are at play, the sand is running, grain by grain(一粒粒). The hands of the clock are moving, second by second. At night, the sand in the hourglass has run through twelve times. The hour hand of the clock has moved all around its great face. This because they keep at work every minute. They do not stop to think how much they have to do, and how long it will take them to do it."

Now, Frank's mother wanted him to learn a little hymn(赞美诗), but he said, "Mother, I can never learn it."

His mother said, "Study all the time. Never stop to ask how long it will take to learn it. You will be able to say it very soon."

Frank followed his mother's advice. He studied line after line, very busily; and in one hour and a half he knew the hymn perfectly.

Mr Brown is a famous doctor. He lives in Sydney with his wife and three children. His wife's father, Mr Black, lives with them too.

Mr Black is too old to work and he always sits in his chair near the bed all day; but in spring, if the weather is nice, he will sit outside. Sometimes, he even takes his chair into the garden if it is warm enough.

Recently, Mr Brown found that spending more than three hours playing outside every day can reduce a child's risk of becoming short-sighted. It challenges the people's belief that short-sightedness is caused by using electronic products or reading in weak light. Many people come to see Mr Brown and ask him why Mr Brown shows his research and believes that natural light has a special chemical which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.

Mr Brown's oldest son, Andersen Brown, is twenty-seven. He is also a doctor like his father. He agrees with his father's idea and he suggests that everyone should spend some time outside. It doesn't matter that time is spent in travelling, playing sports outside or just sitting outside like his grandfather.

Mr Brown's oldest daughter, Wendy Brown, is twenty-four. She is a music teacher. She teaches students in a junior high school. She likes teaching very much. She thinks those teenagers are very lovely.

Mr Brown's youngest son, Mike Brown, is not old enough to go to work. He still goes to school. He is a very clever and hard-working boy. He is good at studying. He wants to be a scientist when he grows up.

Mrs. Brown, who lived alone in the Bridge Block, was asking for help because of his missing cat. "My baby has been missing for over a month now, and I want him back so badly," said Mrs. Brown. She said that Clyde, her 12-year-old cat, didn't come home for dinner more than a month ago. Although he was old and weak, Mrs. Brown loved him a lot. The next morning, he didn't appear for breakfast either. After Clyde missed an extra-special lunch, she called the police.

When the policeman asked her to describe Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear, and was twelve years old and totally white. She then told the officer that Clyde was about a foot high.

"Is Clyde your child or your pet?" the officer doubtfully asked. "Well, he's my cat, of course,"Mrs. Brown replied. "Lady, you're supposed to report missing PERSONS, not missing CATS," said the irritated policeman. "Well, who can I report this to?" she asked. "You can't. You have to ask around your neighborhood or put up flyer (传单)replied the officer.

Mrs. Brown figured that a notice board would work a lot better than a piece of paper on a telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of her street just off the highway. Cars only passed by smoothly between 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The rest of the day, the highway was so full of drivers that no one moves. She took most of the money out of her savings account and rented the notice board with $3,000 for a month.

The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared. Because she has almost no money in savings, Mrs. Brown called the local newspaper to see if anyone could help her rent the notice board for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.
