Once there was a king. He was wise but everyone was afraid of him. His face showed the sadness deep in his heart. So there were deep1lines(皱纹) on his face.

    In his country lived a beautiful girl. Everyone seemed to love her, so did the king. He wanted to2her, and finally he decided to speak to her of his love. After he dressed in his best clothes, he looked in the3,but he saw a hard face,4when he tried to smile.

    How about wearing a mask(面具)?” he thought. Then he ordered his magician to paint a mask that looked kind and happy and handsome. The magician5and said, " But you must keep your own face in the same lines that I paint and be kind to all people from your heart. If not, the mask will break. The mask looked so6that no one knew it was not the true face of the king. Months passed, the beautiful lady7the king, and the king treated everyone8to keep the mask from breaking.

    At last, the king didn't want to cheat his beautiful wife any more.9he asked the magician to take the mask off. Surprisingly, he found his face was just like the mask he had worn10so long!

    This story tells us that a man is what he is in his heart.

    When my family moved to Ohio over the summer, I feared going to another new school and knowing no one because I was able to1what was coming. I had bright red hair and huge glasses. Besides, I was2and not very popular.3on the school bus that first day, I felt like all eyes on me. I could hear the words "She's huge!" Clearly, the kids on the bus had known each other well. I spent that first bus4in silence.

    The following day was even worse. I did not notice that a few boys had tied a rope across the aisle（通道）and then fell face first on the bus, 5everything I was carrying. 6I was uneasily gathering my things, I could hear the laughter, and then the words “That felt like an earthquake!”

    Anyway, I7to find a seat. Looking out of the window, I held back the tears running out of my eyes.

    It was then8I went into myself. I began walking everywhere. I would walk through the woods behind our house. I would also walk to a church.     It was a hot afternoon and Tom was feeling sleepy in his English class. It was a grammar lesson. He 1grammar. He wanted to leave school and work. Tom looked out of the 2. He looked at the trees and flowers. Then he started daydreaming.

    After ten minutes the teacher stopped 3. He asked the students to do some grammar exercises. The students took 4their exercise books and pencils, and started writing. The teacher looked at Tom. He saw that he wasn't writing, so he said, "Why aren't you 5, Tom?"

    "What, sir?" Tom said.

    "6, don't have a daydream, Tom!" the teacher said, "Why aren't you writing?"

    Tom thought for a moment and replied, "I aren't got a pencil."

    The teacher looked at Tom and said, "You aren't got a pencil? You mean you don't 7a pencil?"

    Tom didn't understand the English teacher, 8he said, "Sorry, sir."

    The teacher said in a(n) 9voice, "I don't have a pencil. He doesn't have a pencil. She doesn't have a pencil. We don't have pencils. They don't have pencils. Tom, do you understand?"

    Tom thought for a while and he said, "My goodness! What happened to all the 10, sir?"

    Ray had a wonderful family and lived very happily. He had four grandchildren, and they all came to see him1their holidays. One day, Ray was preparing to welcome them as usual: cleaning the house and cooking delicious food. 2he was working, he lost his favorite watch which was a3from his deceased(已故的)wife. Ray loved the watch very much, and he was very sad.

    When his grandchildren arrived, they 4him they would find the watch. One granddaughter asked, "Grandpa, where did you see the watch last5it went missing?”

    We were going to play a match with a team from a country school. They didn't come 1the match nearly began. They looked 2than we thought. They wore dirty T-shirts and blue jeans and looked like farm boys. We thought they 3saw a basketball before. We felt that we didn't 4any practice to play with such a team. It was very late so they couldn't have any time to practice. The match began, one of our boys5the ball and he tried to give it to another one. But from out of nowhere a boy in a T-shirt6the ball and he quickly and beautifully got the ball into our basket and had two points. They7us. They had another two points in a minute. Soon it was all over. The country team8the match. Of course we knew that there was still another team9than any good team. But the important lesson we learn this time was: One can't tell a man or a team by the10.

    Mr Robinson had to travel somewhere on business, and as he was in a hurry, he decided to go by1. He liked sitting beside a window when he was flying, so after he got onto the plane, he looked for a window seat. He2all of them taken except one. There was a young man seated beside it, and Robinson was surprised that he had not taken the one by the window. Anyhow, he went towards it.

    When he reached it, however, he saw that there was a notice on it, written3large letters, saying "This seat is kept for proper balance. Thank you." Mr Robinson had never seen such a notice before, but he thought the plane must be carrying something particularly heavy in its room which made it necessary to have the passengers properly balance. So he walked on and found4empty seat, not beside the window to sit on.

    Two or three other people5to sit in the window seat next to the young man, but they also read the notice and went on. Then when the plane was nearly full, a very beautiful girl stepped into the plane. The young man, who was watching the passengers coming in,6 took the notice off the seat beside him, and in this way succeeded in having a pretty companion (伙伴)  during the whole trip.
