It was Sunday and Tom was staying at home. After breakfast he went out into the garden and played quietly by himself. There were no kids around and he was used to playing alone quietly. He played with Bobby, the dog. He climbed up and down the tree. Sometimes a bird would come down to perch on top of the doghouse. Then Tom would have the greatest fun by throwing a stone or something at it. Though he never made it, he did like doing this kind of thing.

An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside river. They were disputing which was the better animal。

"Look at my strength," said the elephant. "I can pull up a tree, roots and all, with my trunk"

"Ah! But your skin is not nearly so thick as mine," replied the crocodile." No knife or tooth can cut through it."

Just as they were coming to blows, a lion happened to pass.

"My dear friends!" said the King of all animals, going up to them. "Let me know the cause of your disagreement."

"Will you kindly tell us which is the better animal?" cried both at once.

Certainly, "said the lion, pointing across the river." Do you see the soldiers metal hat on that wall?"

    "Yes!" replied the beasts.

"Well, then," continued the lion, "go and get it, and bring it to me, and I shall be able then to decide between you."

Upon hearing this, off they started. The crocodile, being used to the water, reached the opposite side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall.

Here he waited till the elephant came up. The elephant, seeing that the crocodile had no way of reaching their goal, raised his long trunk, and took down the hat quite easily.

They then made their way together back again across the river. The elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile in the water and became careless. When he was forced to turn sharply to avoid a floating tree branch, the elephant dropped the hat and it fell to the river bottom. The crocodile noticed the accident, so down he dived, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned, and the crocodile laid the metal hat at the lion's feet. The King took it up, and turning to the elephant, said:

"You, because of your size and trunk, were able to reach the hat on the wall but, having lost it, you were unable to get it back. And you, said the lion to the crocodile, "although unable to reach the hat, were able to dive for it and save it. You are both wise and able in your own ways. One is no better than the other."

Have you ever thought how lonely your pet dog will be when you leave home for school or work? Don't worry! A teenager has created a helpful robot for you.

Cassidy Matwiyoff, a student in San Diego, California, created Bowwow. It is a robot and it helps to pet(抚摸) dogs when their owners are not at home. " The robot starts to work by dropping the food. The dog walks over to eat the food. During this process, Bowwow is petting the dog. " Natwiyoff says.

The girl got the idea after watching ABC's Shark Tank. She spent four years creating a prototype (雏形) of Bowwow with the help of her mother. After that, she went to an Engineering and Computing Capstone Design program in Chico State. She was allowed to introduce her invention to a group of engineers and teachers in the hope of getting it produced.

One of them disapproved of the idea. " My dog would rip() this to pieces, " he said. This lit(点燃) a fire within Matwiyoff. She spent the next four months doing research and testing Bowwow for dogs of different sizes and ages.

Matwiyoff hopes to catch an investor's(投资者的) eye soon and bring her invention to the market. " One day, investors will be interested in my product and want to invest it. " she said.

A little weed (野草) grows in a field. All around it stand tall and beautiful flowers. The weed didn't like them, because its own flower was tiny and 1 .

Children like to play in the 2 all year round. And spring is their favorite season because they can pick beautiful flowers. They come and go, singing and laughing.

One day, two sisters came to pick flowers for their grandma. They picked many and soon almost all the flowers were 3 " What about that one?" One said, pointing at the weed.

4 it!" said the other." That's just a useless(无用的) weed!"

It made the weed feel 5 " Am I really useless?" It asked itself." Why was I even put on this earth?" With all the nearby flowers gone, the weed felt lonely. Even though it didn't like them, it liked having them around.

The wind of 6 blew over the field, and it was soon followed by the snow of winter. The weed stood alone in the wild. Just then, it noticed some birds flying high above the field.

" We' re hungry!" They said." Where can we find 7 ?"

The weed felt sorry for the 8 birds and said to them," Down here! I have delicious seeds(种子) that you can eat!" The weed scattered(撒播) its little seeds across the 9 . The birds ate the seeds and 10 the weed." You' re so kind!" They said as they flew away. The weed was happy to help its new friends.

In honour of Mother's DayMichelle shares memories of her mumMarian RobinsonIn a special speechshe reflects on what she learned about parenting from her own mother:

My mother is a woman who chooses her words carefully. She sometimes speaks slowly with a smile to make herself understood. It's a style that makes her a good partner or friend who doesn't need the limelight(公众焦点).

As I've grown older, I've seen how her manner in conversation reflects her way of parenting. When it came to raising her kids, my mum knew that her voice was less important than allowing me to use my own, which meant she listened a lot more than told you how she thought you should behave. During my growing up, she was willing to endure(忍受) endless questions from me: Why do we have to eat eggs for breakfast? Why do people need jobs? Why are the houses bigger in their neighbourhoods? Why do we need to study? She would listen patiently to my reasons, instead of speaking angrily to me, if I had a fight with some of the neighbour kids.

In today's world, it is easy to think that she wasn't being responsible, and that she was letting the kids rule the roost But that was not true. She and my father love their children very much, pouring a deep and long- lasting foundation(基础) of goodness and honesty, of right and wrong, into my brother and me. Even if I got bad grades at school, she never punished me seriously. Instead, she always talked about the reasons with me. What they did simply let us be ourselves.
