There are many different stories as to the origin of coffee and how it (发现). The common one goes like this:In around 600-800 AD, a shepherd, called Kaldi, in the (东部的) Africa, was tending his animals on the mountainside. It happened that a monk(和尚) named Chadely was passing by. The shepherd told him about the sheep and showed him the berries that the sheep ate. They were from the coffee shrub. The monk threw a few into the boiling water to make a drink. This was the first cup of coffee. After (喝)it, he felt wide awake and didn't feel any bad effect on his intellectual abilities(智力).So he took the new discovery back to his monastery to help his fellow monks stay awake (在……期间) their long hours of prayer(诵经).
Coffee soon spread(传播) from monastery to monastery. In the 16th (世纪), it came into Europe and since then it has spread around the world and become one of the most popular drinks.
