I know a Catherine who is smart, educated and interesting. But I avoid her because she never 1 complaining(抱怨)! For years, I fought against my feelings, because I really like and admire(赞赏) her, but I've found I just can't be her friend. Her world is 2“but.”. The trip would have been nice, but the drive was too long.  The food was good, but the light of the restaurant was too  3.  The hotel was too hot, the bed hurt her back and the room service was too slow. Her complaints were 4 changing me.  Months ago, my best friend Daisy was listening to me complaining about Catherine 5 she just became really angry. “Either break up with her, or leave me alone.” She shouted at me, “I'm tired of listening to your complaining. ” Her honesty surprised me, and I began to keep myself away from Catherine. Later, I did 6 her.

Now I try to remain happy and positive (积极的) about life, and find friends of the same. There's been scientific research lately. It shows that people who find 7 to be thankful for their lives are actually happier, and I believe that is true. Endless complaining seems to control your life if you let it come into your brain. And too much complaining will actually make your life 8.

I just returned from a trip to New Jersey. On the way back, I was stopped by a traffic accident. This accident involved a truck carrying a lot of dangerous materials that were leaking out(外漏). This meant that we weren't going anywhere for several hours.

After being told by the policeman that we would be sitting there until the cleanup was completed, I got out of the truck to have a rest. Other truck drivers did the same: At one point there were five of us standing by my truck, 1Another truck with two elderly people inside stopped near us. The man, Joe, let the2down and asked why no one was moving.

Soon we were all talking with this couple. I said that if I had known about this. I would have bought something to drink, for I was becoming3. The lady, Anna said that they had plenty of water in the cooler in their truck and offered everyone something to drink. While she was back there, she said that she also had plenty of food and she could make sandwiches for us. While Anna was making the sandwiches, she was singing like a songbird. Being close to 70, I guessed, she had a remarkable voice.

When she finished making the sandwiches, I saw a Mississippi license(执照) plate on the truck. I asked what part of Mississippi they were from. Joe said Biloxi. Knowing that Biloxi had been4by Hurricane Katrina(卡特里娜飓风). I asked him about the disaster. Joe said that they had lost almost everything. Everything they had was in the truck.

All of us drivers tried unsuccessfully to pay them for their drinks and sandwiches.

Joe said that their son was living around Harrisonburg, Virginia and they were going there. There was a home for sale and they were going to start all over there. Starting over5, we know, would not be easy.

These people lost everything except the pictures and some clothes. These wonderful people lost practically everything they owned and still would not accept any money for their food and drinks. Joe said that it was better to give than to6.

阅读下列材料, 从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中, 选出最佳选项。

As a young man, Alan was a skilled artist and known for his paintings. He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his older son died of a sudden illness. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6- year- old son. The pain was more than Alan could stand, and he turned to alcohol (酒). Finally, Alan became an alcoholic(酒鬼).

Day by day, Alan began to lose everything he had— his home, his job, his art, everything. In the end, Alan died alone in a hotel.

When I heard of Alan's death,I thought," What a complete failure!"

As time went by, Alan's son Ernie grew up. He is one of the kindest and most caring men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and care had to come from somewhere.

I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to excuse an alcoholic. One   day I asked him,"I'm really puzzled by something,"I said."I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do to make you become such a good person?"

Ernie sat quietly for a while. Then he said," From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Alan came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said,‘I love you, son.'"

Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Alan as a failure. He had not left any material possessions(物质财富) behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and he left behind one of the finest men I have ever known.
