I was 16 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} I began work in June 1902 at the whaling station. I heard of the killers that every year helped whalers catch huge whales. I thought, at the time, that this was just a story till then I witnessed it {#blank#}2{#/blank#} my own eyes many times.

    At the{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(one)afternoon I arrived at the station, I was experiencing one  hunting {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(excited).I heard a loud noise come from the bay. We ran down to the shore. Without {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (pause)we jumped into the boat. Using {#blank#}6{#/blank#}telescope we could see that something was happening.The sea was so rough that day that it was difficult{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (handle) the boat. Suddenly ,James fell into the sea. From his face, I could see he was {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (terrify). Then I saw a shark,{#blank#}9{#/blank#}swam towards James . Thank godness! James {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (hold) up by Old Tom back to the boat at last.

    It was a summer afternoon and some boys were playing together in a park. They knew each other well, as they  {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (spend) the last three years of school together and tomorrow was the start of a new term, about  {#blank#}2{#/blank#} they were excited and nervous.

    The first day of school came, and all the boys from the park the day before were put in the same class  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} coincidence. They jumped for joy all morning long. After lunch, the teacher came into the classroom with a boy and it was evident {#blank#}4{#/blank#} they had never seen him before.

    All the children were quiet, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (wait) for the teacher to speak. And she said: “Hello everyone, this is Mei Pei from China, our newest class member. Mei Pei knows some English so I hope you will treat him as if he {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (be) your brother.”

    Then one child said to Mei Pei: “How come you speak {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (different)?” Meipei answered: “In my country, we all talk this way. On {#blank#}8{#/blank#} other hand, we're just the same as you. I wish I {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (speak) English as well as you in three months.”

    The children in the class understood this, and that it also didn't matter what he looked like, or what colour his skin was, or that he didn't speak perfect English.

    So the new {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (add) to the class helped everyone learn how to respect new people. And the boys stayed in the same class for another two years, with Meipei as one of their best friends.

    Mr. Johnson lived in the woods with his wife and children. He owned{#blank#}1{#/blank#} farm, which looked almost abandoned. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (lucky), he also had a cow which produced milk every day. He sold or exchanged some of the milk in the towns nearly{#blank#}3{#/blank#} other food and made cheese and butter for the family with what{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (leave). The cow was their only means of support, in fact. One day, the cow was eating grass{#blank#}5{#/blank#} it began to rain heavily. While making great efforts to run away, she{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (fall) over the hill and died. Then the Johnson tried to make a living{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the cow. In order to support his family, Mr. Johnson began to plant herbs and vegetables. Since the plants took a while to grow, he started cutting down trees{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  (sell) the wood. Thinking about his children's clothes, he started growing cotton too. When harvest came around, he was already selling herbs, vegetables and cotton in the market{#blank#}9{#/blank#} people from the town met regularly. Now it occurred to{#blank#}10{#/blank#} that his farm had much potential and that the death of the cow was a bit of luck.

    There are many great heroes in the world. For example, Gandhi, an Indian {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(nation) hero, was respected as the father of the Indian nation. He has been beloved by the Indians.

    He was born in India in 1869. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(Follow) the local custom, he got married at the age of 13. In 1888 he sailed to England, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} he studied law for three years and became a lawyer. On his return to India, he was sent to South Africa to work on a law case.

    In South Africa,{#blank#}4{#/blank#}surprised him most was that the problem of racial discrimination (种族歧视) was serious. There he formed an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(organize) and started a magazine to fight for equal rights.

    Gandhi returned to India in 1915, when India was controlled by the British. Under his {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(guide), the Indians {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(devote) to fighting for an end to the British rule and independence for their country. In the political movement, many Indians,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (include) Gandhi, were put in prison. However, they struggled bravely without hesitation. The British government had to give {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and India won its independence in 1947.{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (fortunate) Gandhi was shot by an Indian who opposed his views and died on January 30th, 1948.

    Today I went to a conference, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} two students had a debate about the strengths and weaknesses of the Internet.

    The first speaker talked about the positive {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (effect) of the Internet on our lives. The first is its value for people who {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (look) for information. For example, with the touch of a button {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the click of a mouse, a student will find abundant information at his or her command. The second is our ability {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (relate) to others through the Internet and it is especially important for disabled people {#blank#}6{#/blank#} can't leave their homes.

    The {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (two) speaker talked about the negative effects of the Internet on our lives. For example, some experts think that the outcome of spending too much time on the Internet ii difficulty in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (form) social bonds. They were also quite explicit about how heavy Internet users spend {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (much) time with their Internet friends than their real-life friends from school and work.

    Both sides presented lots of statistics to support their arguments. My own judgment is that though the Internet is. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (benefit), we should use our intelligence and not be a slave to it!

Son {#blank#}1{#/blank#} approaches the table in the living room when Grandfather and Father were playing chess, and asked Father {#blank#}2{#/blank#} with him. Father agreed, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} soon Father became angry, for Son planned not to go to college but to focus {#blank#}4{#/blank#} music. Therefore, a {#blank#}5{#/blank#} discussion happened between them. Father wanted Son to be a {#blank#}6{#/blank#}, which could make Son {#blank#}7{#/blank#} and have a good income. However, Son refused Father's advice. At that time, Grandfather told them to calm {#blank#}8{#/blank#} and suggested that Son think carefully before {#blank#}9{#/blank#} in with both feet. Son took Grandfather's advice and wanted to have {#blank#}10{#/blank#} try.
