Don't Let the Candle Off

A man had a little daughter—an only and much-loved child. He lived for her— she was his whole 1 He was so happy to hear his girl's voice that he hardly imagined what he would do 2 her. But unluckily, one day, his daughter became seriously ill. He was very 3. He tried all he could to 4 her. At last, his efforts (努力) was 5 and the child died. The father became a bitter recluse (隐士) after that, shutting 6 away from his friends and refusing(拒绝) every activity that might7 him back to his normal self. But one night he had a dream. He was in heaven, seeing a group of little child angels. They were dressed in white and8 in a line passing by the Great White Throne. Every angel9 a candle. He noticed that all the candles were bright except one. Then he found that the child with the 10 candle was his own little daughter. 11 to her, he held her in his 12, hugged her gently, and then asked, "Why is it, darling, that your candle alone is unlighted?" His daughter said, "Daddy, they often relight it, but your 13 always put it out." Just then he 14 socialized (交际) freely and gladly with his former friends and colleagues. No longer would his darling's candle be put out by his useless tears.

    We can't avoid having a sad 15 during lifetime, but we should remember not to let our beloved person's candle off.

    It was a sunny winter day. I had gone down the tower when a blind man came toward me. He kept close to the wall, touching it lightly with his arm. I stood still and looked at him walking toward the tower.

    "What does a blind man want to climb up the tower for?" I wondered (疑惑), Thinking of some terrible reasons, I thought I should1him.

    He went up slowly and2from time to time. I followed him a few steps behind. When he got to the first corner of the bell tower, I came close to him. "Excuse me," I said as politely as I could, "but I wonder3you came up."

    He smiled, "Perhaps climbing up the tower. You have noticed—and yet, not being blind, perhaps you won't—how the sun shines into the tower4the windows here and there, so that one can5the cool steps suddenly become quite warm, even in winter. But behind the wall there is shade(阴影). There is no place so good as this for feeling the difference between light and darkness. Though I'm blind, I also want to feel the6brought by the sunlight. In fact, it isn't my first time to be here." He said and seemed as7as a child.

    I had never thought that even a blind man could have his way to8the beautiful life. But we often paid no attention to its value because we never9it.

    We went down the10together and I left him. From then on, I began to treasure what life has given me.

    Every day after school, Jack locked himself in his bedroom. He was working on a(n)1project. He didn't tell anyone what he was doing, not even his best friend Larry.

    Jack was 9 outside the kitchen. He was10. He wanted to be an astronaut. He thought this wasn't a good idea. So the next day, Jack went to school himself.

    When I was in the seventh grade, I volunteered about thirty to forty hours a week during the summer at a local hospital in my town. Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Gillespie. He never had any1, and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there     holding his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he replied to me with only a very 2moving of his fingers. Mr. Gillespie was still in a coma(昏迷).

    I left for a week to vacation with my parents, and when I 3 back, Mr. Gillespie had gone. I didn't have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died.

    Several years passed. One day, when I was at the gas station, I noticed a familiar face. When I realized who it was, my eyes filled with 4. He was alive! I asked him if his name was Mr. Gillespie, and if he had been in a coma about five years ago. With a(an) 5 look on his face, he replied, "Yes". I explained how I knew him, and that I had spent many hours talking with him in the hospital. With tears in his eyes, he gave me the warmest hug (拥抱)I had ever 6.

    He began to tell me how, as he lay there in a coma, he could 7 me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angel, not a person, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie firmly 8 that it was my voice and touch that had kept him alive.

    Then he told me what happened to him to put him in the coma. We both cried for a while and exchanged a hug, said good-bye and went our separate 9ways.

    Although I haven't seen him since then, he fills my heart with joy every day. I know that I made a difference between his life and his death. More 10, I will never forget him and what he did for me: he made me an angel.

Billy's favorite color is orange. But he can't see what orange looks like.

Don't let any difficulties get in the way of your dreams."
