I was shocked when my socially awkward sister, who had suffered from Asperger Syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症), decided to sing in front of the school. I knew she would 1 me in some way, so I protested. However, my parents insisted that she 2 and I would have to be part of the audience. I silently hoped that something would happen to 3 me from watching her losing face.

As I waited in the hall, sweat 4 my forehead. I comforted myself that no one knew she was my sister and tried to persuade myself that it would be 5 . The lights darkened and the 6 opened to reveal (使露面) my sister standing alone on stage. She seemed 7 , taking a minute to stammer (结结巴巴地说) her name and class. 8 began to be heard in the audience.

I shifted nervously in my seat, afraid what was about to happen. But as my sister started to sing, I was 9 . Her voice flowed effortlessly and melodiously, filling the hall with its 10 . I watched in wonder, realizing I had never known she could sing so 11 . I listened carefully to the lyric (歌词) she had written herself, feeling ashamed for doubting her 12 . My heart gave way as I heard the heartfelt words.

 In that moment, guilt and shame flooded my heart. 13 my unwillingness to support her, she had never taken anything that I had done to her to heart. It was then that I determined to love her 14 . It was as if a veil (面纱) had been 15 from my eyes, and my heart was full.

Daniel Hove spent years serving his community in Wisconsin as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Burnsville Fire Department. In 2012, he 1 from the job he loved after doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic（胰腺的） cancer.

Daniel spent years fighting the 2 disease. And he had tons of 3 from friends and family. But his beloved 11-year-old Labrador （拉布拉多猎犬）, Gunner,4 by his side every step of the way.

As Daniel's 5 grew more difficult, Gunner became ill, too. And he 6 the highs and lows right along with his favorite human.

"When my dad would get restless, the dog would be 7 ," Daniel's daughter Heather explained. "So once we 8 how the dog was doing—he wasn't moving much anymore and not doing well—we knew, it was coming."

As Gunner's suffering hit its peak, Heather 9 knew the dog's time on Earth was done. Gunner was 10 an animal hospital where the veterinarian put him to 11 forever. And soon after Gunner passed away, Daniel found his 12 was close. About an hour and a half later, Daniel was gone too.13 in life, the dog and his beloved owner also remained that way in death.

Special friends are placed in our lives. And the story of this dog and his owner is a beautiful 14 that sometimes those furry friends offer lifelong 15 without words.

I was heading back home after giving my colleague a lift. I took a  1  as the snowstorm was approaching.

Then the snow started and was coming down  2 . Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The windows were 3 and getting covered with snow, so I slowed down and rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better 4 the road edge and keep to a straight line. But really, I had no  5  where I was. I stopped and kept the car running to stay 6  . I called 911. The operator told me to wait things out for the night.

The call left me in  7 . "Breathe," I told myself. An idea occurred to me. I 8  my location online and explained what I was  9 , wishing for anyone to come to my rescue. Soon enough, people started chiming in on my post. I got a 10 from someone who was going to put me in touch with people nearby. I had never been more  11 .

Then I saw a big 12  in the dark. He had walked about 500 meters to get me, 13  the wind and snow each step of the way. "You'll be OK. Follow me." He turned around and started to trudge through the snow, sure of the 14 . I drove slowly behind him. When we reached his house, I burst into tears of 15 .

In 2017, I was diagnosed (诊断) with Type 1 diabetes (糖尿病). And then I was told that I couldn't drive for a few weeks until my blood sugar levels had1 . 

Driving was a2 very soon after diagnosis for me. I needed to get to the chemist's shop for my diabetes medicine and get to hospital appointments, but at first couldn't, for having been told not to drive. I didn't want to be a3 , having to ask for lifts all the time. 

I found it really4 to be unable to drive, but things settled down after that and seemed to be5 for a while. 6 , to my surprise, I had severe hypoglycemia (低血糖) last year and wasn't able to7 it myself. I called an ambulance and was taken to8 , where I saw doctors and nurses I didn't know as none of them were connected to the diabetes team who usually cared for me. That's where my9 began. They advised me not to drive on the basis of this disease. They told me to call the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) and10 what they'd told me to them. This led to my licence being canceled. 

I couldn't11 all that had happened. It seemed12 . I needed answers and13 , so I phoned the Diabetes UK Helpline number I got from their website. They14 I was right in thinking that the DVLA shouldn't have15 my licence based on this hypoglycemia, according to the law. With their help, the DVLA sent me a letter admitting making a mistake. I got it back in six weeks.

One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along his route. No problems for the first few stops—a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well.

At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back. The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically mild-mannered. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it.

The next day the same thing happened—Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth.

This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong—what's more, felt really good about himself.

So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said. "Big John doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "Oh, yeah? And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a bus pass."

I was so excited when Mrs. Burks announced we were going to the skating rink (溜冰场). I'd never been roller-skating and really wanted to learn how to skate. 

When we got there, everyone 1 inside. Some of us rented our skates and soon began lacing (系好鞋带) them up. Then, everyone but me 2 away from the wall and started skating.

3 onto the handrail (扶手), I pulled myself along the side as I tried moving my legs back and forth. After a few failed 4 , Mrs. Burks skated over to me.

"When you start to 5 , relax. If you struggle to keep from falling, you'll be more 6 to hurt yourself," said Mrs. Burks.

Mrs. Burks 7 for one of my hands. I took a deep breath and 8 her by the hand. As we moved away from the wall, she called out, "Get your 9 . Move your foot forward at an angle and then do the 10 thing with the other foot."

I tried to follow her 11 in every way. "That's good! You're moving your feet like you should. But remember to relax when you start to go down. Let's try again," Mrs. Burks said.

So I did. When I began losing my balance, I crumpled (倒下) to the floor, 12 . Mrs. Burks was right! It didn't 13 as much. I was able to get up faster and try again. 

Later I began to see how Mrs. Burks' guidance worked for other 14 . As long as I kept trying to do my best , I could learn something even when I 15 in those dark moments of my life. I could get back up, try again, and trust someone would be there to help me.
