One of the hottest places on Earth is Death Valley. It's a desert valley in North America. The animals in Death Valley don't use technology to keep cool. They have special abilities that help them live there.

During the day in Death Valley, it gets hotter than 100°F. The kangaroo rat rests all day in a hole in the ground. It covers the hole with grass to keep out the heat. The kangaroo rat comes out at night when it is cooler. This little rat is also very good at saving water. It gets all the water it needs from the food it eats. The Sun makes the desert sand very hot.     A small plane had some trouble with its engine while it was in the high sky. The pilot knew that there was nothing he could do to keep the plane long in the air, so he rushed back to where his three passengers sat and explained the dangerous situation. At last he said, "I am a married man with three children. I am sorry to tell you that there are only three parachutes aboard. " With that he took up one and jumped out.
    One of the passengers reacted quickly. “I am a great man, I am the smartest man and the world can not do without me. "With that he too jumped out.
   The other two passengers, an old man and a young soldier, were quiet for a moment. At last the old man said, “Son, I'm old and have lived a full life. I am ready to meet my God.”

Right in the middle of the town are some long ponds(水池). They are only about half a foot deep. The men of Symi dug out the earth to make the ponds.
Over each pond is a low cover. It is made of glass that you can see through.
At night, sea water is taken into the ponds. The next day, the hot sun shines through the covers. The sun light turns the water into vapor(水蒸气) and the vapor goes up from the ponds. The salt is left behind.
As it goes, the vapor became mist. On the inside of each cover, the little drops of mist run together to make big drops. These drops run down the sides of the cover, filling other ponds with fresh water.
The salt left in the ponds is washed out each night. Then more sea water is taken in. The factory is ready for the next day's work. The covers and other parts of the factory cost very little. Sea water and sun cost nothing. Most people of Symi are poor. So to them this new way of getting fresh water seems wonderful.

   Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆). They can happen any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it's important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.
   Do NOT go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线).
   Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture（家具）. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel（围巾） or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.
   Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the building, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.

Keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself on the fire.
If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it's safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don't drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.

   The forest is a whole world of its own. It is full of many different living things(生物). But even though they are all different, they have one thing in common: they all need each other in order to live on.
   The trees feed the forest "people"by making food in their leaves; by using sunlight to join water and minerals(矿物) from the soil and air. Their deep network of roots joins the soil together and stops it from dying out, making it possible for living things to live in it.
   Human beings(人类) are like the living things in the forest. We need one another in order to live. We need the farmers to grow our food, railroad and truck drivers to bring it to our shops and clerks(售货员) to sell it to us. We need people to prepare our food and cook it and others to take our waste things away. Then, of course, we need doctors, nurses, government leaders, mailmen, telephone operators, and many others.
   We also need other human beings in another way. We need people for friendship, to talk over our problems, exchange ideas. Think how lonely and unhappy you would be if you lived all alone.
   Life is a matter of giving and taking. We need to help other people as much as we need other people to help us. Think what a good feeling you have when you have done something for someone else!

It's cool, it's hot, and everyone is doing it. People talk about it often, and friends tell other friends how good they look. Sound like a fashion? In fact, it's another trend (流行趋势)"blog". What's a blog? A blog is a personal online diary. The word "blogger" means a person who writes diaries onlin
Many bloggers are teenagers who log (进入) onto websites to discuss anything in their lives. Many of today's teenagers are not afraid to openly discuss everything in their lives. Teenagers complain about parents and homework. They share diaries, post songs from the latest bands (乐队) and show pictures of theirs. They write their own poems, say something about their girlfriends or boyfriends and complain to each other or offer support. But mostly they just write down what they do every day.
However, many parents are worried about these young bloggers. Parents see the kids talking about how they got drunk last weekend and how they don't like studying. They are using language that is surprising to their parents. Besides hearing from their friends, teen bloggers also get messages from strangers. Most of the time, it's older men asking to meet teenage girls. "These strange men are dangerous for my kids. They sometimes teach my kids bad words," said Cara Cabral, a mother of two.
Many teenagers and young adults know it's not safe to use blogs on the Internet. They know they are putting information about themselves in a place they can be seen by anyone. But teenagers are unwilling to give up these new communication tools that have become a way of life for many of them.

●Plant flowers grass or trees.

●Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there—-keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.

●Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room. This saves a lot of electricity.

●Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper.

●Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm air in.

●Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.

●Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.

●Use both sides of paper.

●Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or the lakes nearby.

●Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.

You don't have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day.

If everyone makes a contribution (贡献)to protecting the environment, the world will become much more beautiful.
