Everyone changes in his or her life. 1 these changes take place because of an experience. 2 me, high school was such an experience. High school has taught me about myself, and that is the most 3 lesson I have ever learned. It has taken 4 from what I used to be to what I am now.
I used to be quiet and 5, not wanting to show my inner self. I would never talk about 6 was on my mind. I was afraid that someone would criticize(批评)me or tell me I was wrong. I 7 too much about what others thought of me.
Now I am no longer afraid to tell others my 8, and let them know how I feel. I have changed a lot with the 9 of my teachers and friends. They put their confidence in me and told me that I could 10 in doing anything. They taught me that it was not a big deal to fail in 11, as long as I have learned from my mistakes. By 12 the courage to believe in myself, I have become much 13 in mind. The thought of a challenge used to make me feel afraid, 14 now I want to work even harder to 15 the difficulties that stand in my way. I have realized that the ideas I hid in the past can now be contributed (贡献) to the world.

Americans with small families own a small car or a large one. If both parents are working, they usually have two cars. When the family is large, one of the cars is sold and they will buy a van (住房汽车). A small car can hold four persons and a large car can hold six persons but it is very crowded. A van hold seven persons easily, so a family with three children could ask their grandparents to go on a holiday travel. They could all travel together.
Mr. Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell a second car and bought a van. The sixth and seventh seat are used to put other things, for a family of five must carry many suitcases(衣箱) when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents' home, the suitcases are brought into the home and the two seats can then carry the grandparents.
Americans call vans motor homes. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family are traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. All the members of a big family can enjoy a happier life when they are traveling together. That is why motor homes have become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.

Mr. King was the owner of a large company. One day, he went into his office early in the morning to get ready to go to the airport and set out for a city.
He was leaving his office when Bill, a night watchman, came in. Bill just came off work (下班). After saying "Good morning" to Mr. King, Bill told the owner about his bad dream. Last night he dreamed Mr. King's plane crashed after it took off. Mr. King was surprised to hear this. He decided to go by land.
Bill's dream came true. That morning the plane really crashed just after it had taken off. Later Mr. King returned to his office and heard the accident. To express his thanks, Mr. King gave Bill 5,000 dollars with a letter. Mr. King told Bill that a man like him should be sent away. Bill was surprised and asked, "Why?" Mr. King said, "Go home and read the letter, and you'll know why."
Bill went home and opened the letter in a hurry. After he read it, he became very sad. In the letter there was only one sentence. But it was enough to tell the reason. Can you guess why?

Halloween was Monday, Oct 31. Trick or treat! We had a whole week to celebrate. It was called the spirit week.
On the Friday before the spirit week, we were allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school. I dressed up as a witch (女巫). That was pretty fun! We got points for our class by dressing up.
We also had performances during the week. Each class had a theme. We performed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on Monday during the spirit week. The performance included a dance and skit (滑稽短剧). I was in the skit, and I played the character March Hare.
On Monday, we arrived at school at 6 am to do our last rehearsal (排练). I was so excited, even though it was early in the morning and it was very cold outside. Our performance was in the main gym, and every student was there.
I think we really did an excellent job! Although I only had four lines in the skit, I was still proud and happy. The other two classes performed on the following days during spirit week. Theirs were also very nice, but I think ours was the best.
Our hallway was also beautifully decorated. Everyone's locker was painted with colorful pictures. The curtains (窗帘) were hung below the lights to make the hallways look dreamy. I liked it so much.
By the way, we still had our classes as usual during the week. Anyway, I really had a wonderful time! I am looking forward to next Halloween.

Have you ever tried to understand something new on your own but found it in books or on the Internet a bit too difficult? Don't be worried—you can get help at Khan Academy(可汗学院).
Khan Academy is an online learning website created in 2007 by Salman Khan, an American teacher. In order to provide "a free world-class education to anyone anywhere", Khan offers more than 4, 200 free micro lectures(讲座) at khanacademy.org.
The classes cover fields like mathematics, biology, chemistry and finance. They usually last for just 10 to 15 minutes. Unlike traditional classes, Khan mainly provides courses for students below college level. The classes can also help those who are planning to take the SAT, an exam often required for students who wish to enter a college or university in the US.
So how can you start your learning journey at Khan Academy?
First of all, enter the learning page with a personal e-mail account(账户). It's your personal homepage at Khan Academy, which is coolly designed to help you learn math. You can take a pre-test first to see your level. The academy then suggests exercises at the right level for you. It also allows you to watch videos and improve yourself until you reach level 5—the highest level.
If you are interested in other subjects, click "LEARN" to see all topics on offer. Try "Art History", for example. This will take you to all the things in that area like text articles, videos and questions. You can also put key words into the search box to see related topics.
Don't worry if you find it difficult to follow the courses in English. The courses have been translated into other languages, such as Chinese. Hundreds of Khan's courses in Chinese can be found on Netease, which offers translations of courses from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities.
