I joined a band as a drummer(鼓手)in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing
1 drum and meeting new friends. At first it was easy, but2 months later, it got worse. I was the only one3 couldn't catch up with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, chose me out to practise 4 everyone else got to relax. I felt 5 as my teammates were always watching me. Finally, I got very tired of practicing, and I didn't care about6 it right.
"Are you giving up on me, Steve?" Angie asked.
"Yes, I am," I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room, where I cried out. Then she came in and said, "Don't be sad, I believe you can make it!" She left and made me7 for a while. I finally8 Angie was right—by giving up, I not only gave up myself but also the team.
9 her comfort, I decided to try my best. However, I still couldn't play well. Knowing my trouble, my teammates gave me a hand.10 spent about three more hours staying with me every week. Thanks to their support and help, I began11 up with them. Later, we performed12 in an important show.
In the whole process, I 13 that we each had our own job to do in a show, but it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted14 made great progress. I love everyone in the band, and I15 imagine what my school life would be like without them.
For a period of month some time ago, I became a vegetarian(素食者). Some people won't eat meat because they think it is1 to animals, or they care about their health. My reason is a little2 : it is love.
I simply wanted to remember my grandmother by not eating meat. My grandmother spent a large part of her life as a vegetarian, and some of my happiest childhood memories in Thailand were about sharing a3 with her.
In fact, as a child, I learned how to value food not from dishes that my mother often4 , but from the simple dinner my grandmother prepared. Often, dinner with Grandma would come with interesting stories she had known from her childhood.
Grandma passed away more than ten years ago. Now I am an adult living in San Francisco, and Grandma's vegetarian suppers and5 have become a past.
But one morning, I suddenly thought that I could6 hear the sound of my grandmother's voice because she had left me forever. So, I decided to become a vegetarian for a month.
In a city famous for its dining experience, this was7 . I8 several dinner parties for fear of offending( 冒 犯 ) the hosts. I stopped walking by9 where the smell of good cooking would be in the air. My best friend wondered if there was something wrong with me.
Now, I10 her way. I invited friends who wanted to taste vegetarian food. And as we ate, I told them stories I had known as a child.
A Farewell Song Wang Wei
⑴No dust is raised on the road wet with morning
⑵The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
⑶I invite you to drink a cup of wine again.
West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen. (Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
With the temperature rising, spring is a good time to go out and travel far away. Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei bid farewell to his friend in this season. The poem A Farewell Songdescribes his experience. On a spring rainy morning, Wang has to say goodbye to his friend Yuan Er who would leave for a faraway place called Anxi, in today's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Wang hopes that his friend Yuan will safely return from Anxi, although he knows that they might not see each other again. Even with this knowledge, the poet is not willing to show much sorrow or sadness for Yuan's departure(离开). Instead, he wants to take the time to treasure their friendship and invites Yuan to drink a cup of wine. In the poem, Wang uses the skill of exchanging roles. On the surface, the poet says goodbye to his friend. But the fact is that the two likely have no chance to see each other again. So it is that Yuan says goodbye to the poet as well.
Wang Wei is considered one of the greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty, along with Du Fu and Li Bai. Of the three, Wang Wei was the only one who had a successful career in the bureaucracy
(官场). When he was free, he spent much time in the countryside thinking about nature. Wang is best known for describing quiet scenes of water and mist, with few details and little human presence. He has been praised for "putting painting into his poetry and poetry into his painting".
It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced(浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise. Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited. He thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. "I thought you preferred the sea to being on land."
"I do," replied the Captain. "But these forests are under the sea." During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits(潜水服)that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were in the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe。
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The "trees" in the forest were giant seaweed(海带), and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and then we woke up, we walked further.
(The story was taken from one of the chapters in Two Thousand Leagues Under the Sea)
a. They lay down to rest.
b. They visited the forest.
c. They put on the diving suits.
d. They crossed the large grassy area.
e. Captain Nemo invite some people to go hunting.
We all know that eating junk food can make us fat. However, a new study suggests that it can do more than that -- it can also make us lazy, reported CBS NEWS.
In the study, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, U.S. divided 32 female rats into two groups. The first group was fed a diet of healthy food such as corn and fish, while the second was given a diet of highly processed (加工的) food rich in sugar, namely "junk food".
Within three months, the rats in the second group were already much fatter than those on the healthy diet. And when researchers trained the rats to do simple tasks, they found even more differences between two groups besides weight.
During the task -- pushing a lever (杠杆) to receive a reward of sugar water -- the rats on the junk food diet were found to be less willing to move, and they took longer breaks between each push than the thin rats did.
"It is as if the rat is thinking This is too much work',"Aaron Blaisdell, leader of the study, told the Los Angeles Times.
But what about the possibility that the fat rats were less interested in getting sugar water because they were already eating lots of sugar in their daily diet? That is why researchers repeated the tests by rewarding fat rats with pure water when they were extremely thirsty. However, the results came out just the same.
According to researchers, these differences suggest that junk food changed the chemistry in the rats' brains.
For a long time, we have believed that people become fat because they are lazy. But this study has proved the opposite to be true as well, which shows that laziness and obesity are a vicious cycle (恶性循环)"
So, if you often feel tired, unwilling to get up from your chair, it could be that you have been studying too hard. But you should also pay attention to your diet.
Years ago green was simply a color. Now it's much more! In the 1970s, some people began to worry about what we did to mother Earth. It is a big idea that touches governments all over the world, and a small idea that touches us all in our homes.
Architects (建筑师) and building engineers are thinking about how to make buildings greener. These days, green architecture is becoming more and more popular.
We need to be very careful about the materials (材料) we use. It is better to choose renewable materials-those that the Earth replaces quickly. Also, for those materials that are not renewable, we need to use them as little as possible. Our mother Earth has offered us many other possibilities, such as wind and solar power.
Planners must think about the needs of those who will spend time in green buildings. In many cases, green energy is more comfortable for people.Natural lighting is often kinder to the eyes than electric lighting. In fact, many people who live or work in green buildings report feeling happier and healthier.
For example, they might try to use as little land as possible. If a building covers a large area, there will be less space for plants and trees. They also have to think about cutting down waste and pollution while the building work is going on.
Although green buildings are more expensive to build, they are less expensive to run.
A. Or we can reuse some materials. B. As a result, green thinking was born. C. To understand it, we have to look at three different areas. D. For example, natural wind brings people cleaner and fresher air. E. Architects must consider what the building will do to the environment. |
This summer holiday, I was lenough to be chosen to be the audience for a TV show. The topic of the show is about health. The dinvited a doctor to be the guest. "Do you know how we can keep healthy?" The doctor said that it is nto eat more fruit and more vegetables. He told us to drink more water and less fizzy drinks(汽水). But do we listen? No, we continue to eat pof junk food like pizzas, sweets, chips, cakes and biscuits. People eat junk food because it's tasty, but everybody can have a tasty meal at home. The only problem is that buying fresh products and cooking them take time. And people prefer to spend time doing other activities, such as watching films, meeting friends and so on. I also like to do these activities, but I am very careful of my body. If you want to be healthy, you should have a bdiet every day.
