What does wishing mean to you?
Do you like to make wishes? In the west, an old tradition is to make wishes with 1 . Because water is so important to life. People felt it was a 2 from the gods. So, they started throwing coins into wishing wells or fountains(喷泉). They must say their wishes out loud. This way, they believe the spirits(精灵) of the water will 3 the wishes and make them come true.
Disney's film Wish(《星愿》) 4 in November, 2023. It's about a girl and the wishing star. In the film,17-year-old Asha makes a wish to the sky.
In Australia, where I'm from, we like to make wishes in 5 ways. Playing outside, you see a dandelion(蒲公英). Pick one up and 6 its seeds away, then make a wish! Or you could throw a coin into a wishing well or fountain to make a wish. And of course, no one 7 making a wish on their birthday.
I would sometimes make wishes at Christmas. One year, I left cookies and milk for Santa Claus and wrote a note to him: "Dear Santa, please tell my dad to stop smoking. It is 8 for his health." On Christmas Day, I saw the reply from "Santa". He wrote: "Dear Maddy, thank you for the cookies and milk. As for your dad stopping smoking, that is something he has to do for himself." Can you guess who wrote it?
I felt a bit 9 that Santa couldn't help my dad. But it 10 me something important: only the person himself or herself can really make the wish come true.
Breakout year for AI
For language masters like ChatGpt to helpful "painters" such as Midjourney, Al is changing how we live. No wonder(难怪) the UK's Collins Dictionary has named "A" as the Word of 2023.
AI is now an everyday technology, as common as e-mail or online video, said Alex Beecroft from Collins. And you can see this in "Time's Best Inventions of 2023". There are 14 Al tools on the list.
TrailGuard AI helps to protect wild animals. Small camera on it keep an eye on animals and look out for poachers(偷猎者). It has helped to catch 30 poachers in Africa.
How can we tell a real thing from a fake one? FeaturePrint helps. It is an app using AI. Take a photo of something like gold, a watch or a bag. Then FeaturePrint "sees" the details on it. It tells you whether the thing is real or not.
If these things can't make you excited enough, take a look at Google's most advanced (先进的)AI, Gemini. It can understand text, picture, audio (音频), video and code(代码). It does well in a test that includes 57 subjects, such as math, history and law.
What could Al do next? Will you use AI to help you with your study? We will have to wait and see.
Stupid but serious
You see a cat sunbathing on the playground. "Hello, kitty!" You smile and walk away. About100 years ago, a scientist saw the same scene(场景). But he stopped and thought. Later, he won the Nobel Prize(诺贝尔奖).
The scientist was Niels Finsen from Denmark(丹麦). He saw a sick cat sleeping in the sun. When the sun moved, the cat moved, too. Why did the cat love the sun so much? To find out the answer, Niels kept watching the cat for days. Amazingly, the cat got better after lots of sunbathing. The sunlight could cure diseases! Then, Niels invented a light to cure human diseases and won the Nobel Prize in 1903.
In fact, many great scientific findings start from "stupid" questions and small things in life.
Scientists may ask: How many lies does a person tell in a day? How many licks(舔)does it take to eat up a lollipop? Why do roses smell good? What can we learn from animal poop(粪便)? And they take it seriously. They watch, think, and do experiments(实验) until they find an answer.
"It's such a waste of time!" You may say.
But think of the great scientist Newton(牛顿). If he just said "Ouch!" and walked away after he was hit by the apple, what might our world be like?
As many as 110 middle and high school students from more than 90 countries and regions(地区) took part in the 16th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for ForeignSecondary School Students. Folke Borgstorm is an 18-year-old from Sweden. When he visited Beijing for the competition, he bought a jade necklace(玉石项链). Borgstorm said he knew about jade from a Chinese TV show. "A main character in the TV show wears jade and it makes him look cool. Jade can have many colors like green, red and white," said Borgstrom. He became interested in it and started to learn more about it.
Botgstorm also enjoyed watching popular short dramas. "Most Sweden TV shows tell of boring everyday life," he said. "But Chinese shows have interesting stories."
Amazed by a Chinese host
Many of the students hoped to learn more about Chinese culture on the trip, but Ai Akasaki, from Japan, wanted to meet her idol, Sa Beining. Sa is a well-known host in China. The 16-year-old girl watches the Spring Festival Gala(春晚) every year and likes the funny Sa. "I also watched other shows Sa hosts, like Everlasting Classics(《经典咏流传》). In those beautiful songs, I found Chinese poetry is as beautiful as Japanese haiku(俳句)," said Ai.
Unluckily, she didn't meet Sa this time. But she wants to be a journalist(记者) in China and work with Sa one day.
