I was unbelievably proud of my nine–year–old daughter, Emily. Determined to buy a mountain bike, she'd been saving her pocket money all the year, as well as doing small jobs to earn extra money.
By Thanksgiving Day, she had collected only$49. I said, "You can have your pick from my bicycle collection." "Thanks, Daddy. But your bikes are so old." She was right. All my girls' bikes were 1980s models, not the kind kids today would likely choose.
As Christmas drew near, Emily and I went bike shopping. As we left one store, she noticed a Salvation(救助) Army volunteer standing next to a big pot. "Can we give something, Daddy?" she asked. "Sorry, Emily. I'm out of change."
Throughout December, Emily continued to work hard. Then one day, she made a surprising decision. "You know all the money I've been saving?" she said hesitantly. "I'm going to give it to the poor people." So one cold morning before Christmas, Emily gave her total savings of$58 to a volunteer who was really very thankful.
Affected by Emily's deed, I decided to contribute one of my old bicycles to a car dealer who was collecting used bikes for poor children. As I selected a shiny model from my collection, however, it seemed as if a second bike took on a glow (发光). Should I contribute two? No, one would be enough. But I couldn't shake the feeling that I should give a second bike. When I later delivered the bikes, the car dealer said, "You're making two kids very happy, sir. Here are your tickets. For each bicycle contributed, we're giving away one chance to win a girls' mountain bike."
Why wasn't I surprised when that second ticket turned out to be the winner? I like to think it was God's way of rewarding a little girl for a sacrifice (牺牲) beyond her age—while giving her dad a lesson in the process.
Rap, a style of hip-hop music, was created in the 1980s in the United States. It first became popular among young black people in New York City. By the beginning of the 21st century, it had become a presence around the world. Its performers, called rappers, have their own fashion style. They often wear a baseball cap, large jewelry, brightly colored clothes and oversized jeans. And it's evident that rap is no stranger to negative stereotypes (刻板印象), but this entertainment medium, is actually a means of human expression. You can find a lot of evidence.
Rapper Chen Jinnan performed her hit song Malice From the World on the reality show Rap for Youth. Chen said that she wrote the song last year after receiving a message from a fan who was battling severe depression and had been ignored by her parents and schoolmates. "I shared my own story with her in the hope of offering her encouragement," Chen told China Daily. Another rapper who appeared on the show is a well-known rapper TangoZ, who expresses his love for his hometown of Hangzhou — his "heaven on Earth"— and raps in the dialect. "Wu dialect is disappearing at an alarming rate, so I struggle to make the situation a bit better." he told independent media platform RADII China.
Just as Li Yuchun, a mentor (导师) on the reality show, pointed out that rapping is not defined by anger. "A lot of people think that Diss–or disrespect–is the only definition of rap. But on this show, I'm touched and proud of the fact that you can express gratitude and kindness through music writing and rapping," she said.
Actually, rapping, for most performers, is a way to express opinions and let their voices be heard. If you dive deep into it, you'll find that it's charming. Just as Hannah George wrote on the website Soundigest. "It's a diary ... someone's life on display for the world to enjoy, grieve (悲伤) with or be inspired by."
They say, "Online retailers (零售商) try to show you things that you wouldn't have discovered otherwise. But we don't think it compares to the experience of walking into a store and seeing things you wouldn't have seen otherwise."
That's hardly an old-fashioned view. One of the misunderstandings in retail is that because younger customers are comfortable with digital technologies, they're less interested in shopping in person. In fact, researchers have found that both millennials (千禧一代) and the generation born after 1995 prefer brick-and-mortar shopping to buying online.
Now in the pandemic age, retailers are working on making ordering online and picking up at the store a seamless (无缝衔接的) process. And that could be just the start. Other mixed models will appear, especially as retailers get rid of delays from the system, says Kirthi Kalyanam, executive director of the Retail Management Institute at Santa Clara University in California. Amazon, which already provides free two-day delivery to prime members, now offers one-day delivery nationwide for a fee and same-day delivery on select items in several cities. Its Amazon Fresh grocery service lets shoppers choose delivery within two to three hours.
Stores will increasingly become places to show products rather than to store inventory (存货), says Mr. Kalyanam. Online retailers will re-create their online image in a real space: Think Apple stores or Lululemon. And consumers will have multiple ways to buy their goods. Stores might not even carry inventory, but promise to deliver your purchase from a nearby warehouse in a half-hour.
Changing the definition of a library
Now that the Internet provides us with direct access to all kinds of information, some people say we don't need public libraries.
Finnish designers have used the new concept of a useful public space. The library opened its doors at the end of last year.
Antti Nousjoki, one of Oodi's architects, said the idea is to make the place "an indoor town square." According to Tash Reith-Banks of the Guardian, this is quite different from the normal idea of libraries - "stale (陈腐的) and silent."
Of course, Oodi still serves as a traditional library, with a catalogue of about 100,000 books. But considering the fact that Oodi has attracted almost a million viewers during the past four months, with around 7,500 daily visitors, it's providing more than just books.
While most libraries around the world offer Internet access and other services, Finnish libraries often differ themselves in services, including access to e-publications, power tools and even karaoke. Its multi-function rooms are designed to accommodate both noisy and quiet activities. It also offers devices like a 3D printer and recording studios.
"Oodi has been designed to give citizens and visitors a free space to actively do what they want to do —not just be a consumer," said Nousjoki.
A. Oodi goes even further.
B. It attracts many visitors with each new month.
C. Oodi has many advantages over traditional libraries.
D. Since opening, Oodi lends out 5,000 books each day.
E. Library Oodi pushes the boundaries (边界) of what a library can be.
F. This may be why some public libraries are finding new ways to serve the public.
G. The building was designed without inner support columns(柱子), so the inside is mostly a large open space.
A Special Christmas Gift
Even though it was only October, my students were already talking about Christmas plans. With each passing day everyone became more 1waiting for the final school bell. Upon its ringing everyone would run for their coats and go home, everyone except David. David was a small boy in ragged clothes. I had often 2what kind of home life David had, and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so3for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David 4. I can still remember he was always wearing a smile and willing to help. He always5after school to straighten chairs and mop the floor. We never talked much. He would just smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly 6home.
Weeks passed and the7over the coming Christmas gradually 8restlessness (不安) until the last day of school before the holiday break. I smiled in9as the last of them hurried out of the door.10I saw David quietly standing by my desk.
"I have a gift for you." he said and pulled from behind his back a small box.11it to me, he said "Open it." I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. But I saw nothing. I looked at David's smiling face, saying, "The box is nice, David, but it's 12 ."
"Oh no it isn't," said David, "It's full of love. My mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn't see or touch13you know it's there."
Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the proud dirty face that I had14 given attention to. After that Christmas, David and I became good friends and I never forgot the meaning15the little empty box set on my desk.
More and more public schools in America makea rule that certain amounts of community service (require) before students are allowed to graduate from high school. They work on projects like making the environment better.
Many schools in the United States now ask students (do) some kinds of community service part of their studies. Students involved in service projects help themselves as well as their communities. It is for this reason holidays have become the main period for volunteer work so far. Volunteers get no pay, but experts point out that it is excellent opportunity to learn and practice new skills. (base) on the statistics, more than 60% of young Americans have taken part in many kinds of community service, such as cooking for (home) people, or painting old buildings, etc. Some students like to do their volunteer work in central parts of America, but the (major)of teens prefer to do it in their hometowns. Tom, a 16-year-old student in California, often does community service in a local hospital. He works 16 hours every week either receiving calls at the information desk, or (help) push patients back to their wards.
