Perhaps you are a corporate manager who is about to attend a few business dinners in China, or maybe you are meeting your significant other' s family at a dinner in Shanghai. Either way, you can be sure that lots of drinking is involved during these Chinese social events.
What you will be drinking.
Baijiu- Also called sorghum wine, baijiu is the drink of choice for business dinners in China. The most popular brand of baijiu is Maotai , which can be as strong as 60% alcohol-by-volume（compared to an average vodka at 40% ABV).
Red wine-Red wine has increased in popularity at Chinese dinner tables in recent years along with the rising interest in luxury goods.
Beer-Popular Chinese beer brands include Tsingtao and Harbin Beer, which are crisp, refreshing lagers(淡啤酒） that can cool the burning sensations from drinking baijiu.
Courage, quantity, and quality
It's perfectly all right if you get drunk, and if you leave sober, your hosts might think they've failed to show the proper hospitality.
The bottom line is, it's best if you drink whatever they give you. This is called jiudan-“drink courage". Of course, having jiudan doesn't automatically mean you have a good jiuliang-“drinking capacity" or the ability to hold your drink. But this really doesn't matter, as long as you have good jiupin-“drink manners" or the way you behave when drunk. Ideally you'll have all three, but if you don't, the first one is the most important.
General etiquette
When clinking glasses, the junior people should always hold their glasses lower than those of senior folks. Also, if you are late for the party, you are expected to punish yourself by drinking.
Lastly, it is considered extremely rude to refuse a drink after someone toasts you. Of course, "drying your glass" is considered the utmost respect at the dinner table.
Even with wonderful friends, family and a partner, I don't always want to be surrounded by people. "Table for one? Or will someone else be joining you?" A dinner reservation for one person never fails to raise a few eyebrows. I actively choose to spend time alone when possible. But not everyone has the luxury of choosing to be alone, of course, many are forced into one-on-one time because they have no one.
But for those of us who spend our days surrounded by colleagues in the workplace, our evenings and weekends with family, friends and partners, all the while being constantly bombarded by WhatsApp, social media and email, time to ourselves can be a rare treat. Time to yourself not only gives you the chance to do practical things you don't normally get round to but also the activities your pals don't want to do. In a less real way, spending time alone also allows-or perhaps forces- you to sit with your own thoughts, to think about things that might normally be drowned out by conversation and the noise of companionship. When you're alone you get time to think without purpose.
It is worth noting that I'm a real introvert(性格内向者）, so perhaps sitting alone with my thoughts-refilling my energy reserves-might just be indulging personality traits that others don't have. But I believe more people could benefit from it.
Given this constant social conditioning since childhood that we should be surrounded by people, it's no wonder many hesitate to press forward at the idea of spending time alone-a sign we've failed at climbing that social ladder. And if you're an extrovert who gets their energy from other people, this must be even harder. But as someone who has come to love spending time alone, even when there are many wonderful souls in my life I can spend time with, I wish more people would give solo a go.

Early data from Israel suggests Covid-19 infection rates began to decrease among a group of vaccine (疫苗) recipients two weeks after they received the first shot of Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE's vaccine, offering important insights to other countries as they roll out their own campaigns.
The small country — whose roughly nine million population is about the size of New York City's — has vaccinated nearly a fourth of its population in just under a month, the first country to hit that mark as it fights an upsurge (激增) in new infections.
Israel's largest health-care provider, Clalit Health Services, compared test positivity rates among 200, 000 people over 60 who received the vaccine with 200, 000 that didn't. Until day 14, there was little difference between the two groups. But after that, the data showed a 33% fall in infection rates among those who had already been vaccinated compared with those who hadn't. Clalit noted that the number of people infected was statistically significant, but said it wouldn't release final numbers until its study is published.
Pfizer says people must receive both doses of the vaccine for it to be fully effective. In Pfizer's trials, the vaccine was shown to take about 12 days before it started to protect people. The Clalit study suggests that the first dose could reduce infections among those vaccinated as early as two weeks after injection.
Israel, like many other countries, has given priority to those over 60 in the first stage of its vaccination drive, making the group the best fit for study. Nearly three out of four people in this age group have received the first dose of the vaccine since Israel's campaign began on Dec.20.
Israel has committed to providing Pfizer with real-time data about their vaccine, from effectiveness to side effects, which Israeli officials said helped it obtain early supply from the vaccine maker. Separately, Israel's Health Ministry published data about side effects from the vaccine, saying they were similar in frequency and character to other vaccinations given to its people.
As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black Mary Jane shoes—I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School.
I stood at Mrs. Blackstone's door. Before I tried the great escape, the wooden door suddenly opened to the loud voice of Mrs. Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher.
"We've been waiting for you!" She said loudly. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left standing in front of a group of students.
Over the next few days, Mrs. Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend. During history lessons, when I didn't want to speak in front of the class, she'd not only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates.
One spring afternoon, Mrs. Blackstone asked me to stay after class.
"I'd like to speak with you, Amanda."
My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone's feelings?
"Are you enjoying your new school?" She sat comfortably behind her desk.
"I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else." With her eyebrows raised she continued, "I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show—I think you have great potential to be something very important."
I listened attentively to every word.
"I've been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That's very important. Remember that and you'll go far."
She then hugged me and said, "See you tomorrow."
Her singsong voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her class, not staring at my Mary Jane shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me!
One of the best ways to keep in touch with your inner soul is by writing. You needn't worry about choosing your words carefully so as not to hurt anyone. You can choose to record everyday happenings of your daily life, or the special events. You can put down your thoughts, ideas or feelings. Writing is your conversation with yourself.
When you start a diary, you can be yourself on those pages, understanding yourself as well as others. We often fail to read social cues, facial expressions, body language, etc. It's like reading a book, where you understand the characters and situations easily, except, the characters are you and your acquaintances, and the situations are real.
On a daily basis, we go through several confusions. We often get confused with too many thoughts in our head. Writing helps to organize them. Things we are unable to process, feelings we are unable to recognize – they find a definition and recognition.
When you write a diary, you also leave yourself something to look at later. Have you ever found a letter, a copy, or just a gift that has made you go back in time? Have you ever found a piece of your life, a memory of the past, missing? In your diary, you revisit the moments you have been through and how you have come out of them stronger.
So make it a habit to write a diary. Write to keep a record. Write to develop your language. Write to accept failure. Write for no reason, because writing a diary is one of the best lifestyle choices, which will help you become your own friend.

A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family's income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to sec that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour. I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.
