When I was growing up, Mother's Day was as important as Christmas.

The energy around the house was always positive (积极的), mostly thanks to my father who made sure that his kids appreciated their mother. We would clean the house, and Mum got breakfast in bed in the morning and didn't have to lift a finger all day. And in the evening, we went to a restaurant for a traditional Mother's Day dinner.

What I learned from my father over the years, was that no matter what, he always put my mother before himself. He absolutely loved her and never let her forget that. And from my parents, I learned a thing or two about how to love.

I maintain (保持) my father's Mother's Day tradition with my wife. Growing up, I learned that showing affection to the woman you love or who gave birth to you is an important part of life. You see, it goes both ways, and the love you have for your mother comes back to you again and again.

Believing that and feeling it when you can may keep you from being lonely, even if your mum isn't close by or has passed away. There are a number of us who no longer have a mother in our lives, and truth be told, there are often times when I wish my mum were still here to comfort me. So instead, I remember the times she did just that. It makes me smile, and somehow, those memories of a more simple and loving life give me the comfort I'm looking for.

My wife's mother is still around, however, and it's great to have that "mother energy" in my life still. Having this relationship with my motherinlaw is nice because it gives me someone to be there for on Mother's Day, and any other day of the year.

If you are mumless, you too should find a deserving woman in your life and celebrate Mother's Day with her. If you don't know anyone, there are plenty of lonely mums in rest homes who would enjoy your company for a couple of hours. The visit will make both of your days, and perhaps your lives, a little bit better.

    (1) What did the author learn from his father?
A . It's necessary to express love to those we love. B . We should always put others before ourselves. C . It's important to have an interesting family tradition. D . Mothe's Day is just as important as Christmas.
    (2) Why does the author value the idea of showing love for one's mother?
A . It can set a good example for kids to follow. B . It is what mothers expect their children to do. C . It can warm your mother's heart as well as yours. D . It's important to follow your father's rules.
    (3) According to the passage, which is TRUE?
A . After mother's death, the author often felt lonely. B . The relationship between the author and his motherinlaw is not good. C . The author keeps Mother's Day tradition now. D . The author thinks Mother's Day is more important than Christmas.
    (4) What is the author's advice to someone whose mum has passed away?
A . Give all your attention to your motherinlaw. B . Try to get used to life without a mum. C . Turn to other family members for love. D . Visit lonely mums in rest homes on Mother's Day.

In October, I told the eightyearolds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. "Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money," I said, "then we'll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."

I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. "Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.

"You can't eat flowers."—It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.

"But Mrs Sherlock," came the begging voice, "we want flowers."

Defeated finally, I put a pot of "funny" purple mums in the cart full of foods. "She'll like this one," the children agreed.

An organisation had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightlybuilt woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.

My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying "Thanks."—much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.

We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.

The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another's life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.

    (1) What does the story mainly tell us?
A . Everyone has the power to change the world. B . Acts of kindness can change someone's life. C . The poor people may need flowers as well. D . Children have different thoughts from adults.
    (2) What does the underlined word "mums" refer to in the passage?
    A . Mothers. B . Teachers. C . Flowers. D . Gifts.
    (3) Why did the author consider the mums "funny"?
A . Because she thought they were too ugly. B . Because she thought they were for children. C . Because she thought they were too expensive. D . Because she thought they couldn't help people in need.
    (4) What can we know from the passage?
A . The old woman preferred food to flowers. B . Flowers are more important than food to the poor. C . The old woman's dark day was brightened by the children. D . All the money the children earned was transformed to food.

Keeping Safe in Your House During a Fire

Though you may not think you'll ever fall victim to a house fire, it's better to be prepared to avoid panicking. To increase your chances of survival, just follow these steps.

React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm go off. On hearing your smoke detector or alarm going off and seeing a fire, exit your home as safely as possible. Your only concern is to get out of there as fast as possible. Nothing else is as important as this. You should be getting yourself and your family members out safely.

Safely exit through doors. If you don't see smoke at the door, open it slowly and pass through it after making sure the door feels cool. If there is a fire preventing you from exiting the room, close the door.

Protect yourself from smoke inhalation (吸入浓烟). Get low to the floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to avoid the smoke. Cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by or through a room filled with heavy smoke.

If your clothes catch fire, immediately stop what you're doing, drop flat onto the ground, and roll around until you put the fire out.

Prevent the smoke if you can't get out. Close your door and cover all vents (通风口) and cracks (缝隙) around it with cloth or tape to keep smoke out. Whatever you do, don't panic. You can always reclaim some measures of control, even if you feel trapped.

Call for help from a secondstory window. You can take a sheet or something else—white preferably—and hang it out the window to signify that you need help when the first responder get there.

    A. If you can't escape your home, don't panic.

    B. Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire.

    C. You are probably a lot safer by closing doors.

    D. Escape from a secondstory window if you can.

    E. Smoke inhalation causes people to become unconscious.

    F. Do not try to get your phone, valuables, or your other important possessions.

    G. If you are trapped in your secondstory room, get to an area where people can find you.

Jack and his wife Tonya were sailing around Africa with their friends Max and Sasha. One day they saw a big fishing boat. It was moving fast.

"Hello!" they shouted. The men on the boat looked at them angrily. Max looked carefully at the boat

"Something's wrong with their fishing net," he said. They got nearer to the net.

"What's that?" said Tonya. "There is something in the net. It's alive."

    Very slowly they moved nearer.

"I can see it now," said Tonya, "It's a killer whale—it's hurt. There's blood in the water. How can we help it?"

"I can see it too. It's a baby but we must be careful," said Max.

Jack jumped into the water, "I can get the net off its fin (鳍)," he said.

Jack got the net off the baby killer whale. There was a big cut on its fin. It swam away. Suddenly there were other killer whales near the boat.

"Jack!" Tonya shouted. "Get in quickly." Jack swam to the boat as fast as a fish. "That baby killer whale... I am going to call it Lucky," he said.

As they moved away, it began to rain harder and harder.

Jack said, "We must get away from the wind. I can see a town over there. Let's go."

The town got nearer but the waves got bigger. Suddenly a very big wave hit the boat.

    "Is everyone OK?" shouted Jack.

"Tonya?... She's not in the boat," said Sasha. "She's in the water."

They looked into the cold, dark water for hours." Tonya! Say something, Tonya.  Where are you?" shouted Max.

The wind got stronger and the boat was full of water. Another big wave hit the boat.

"Jack, do you want us all to die?" said Max. "We can't do any more. Tonya is wearing a life jacket (救生衣) and she can swim very well. Let's sail to the town."

Moments later the boat hit a beach. They went out. Max and Sasha slept on the beach. Jack sat near the water, looking at the sea and thinking about Tonya.
