A young boy and his father were walking along a forest path. On their way, they came across a(n) 1 tree branch (树枝) on the ground in front of them. The boy asked his father, "If I try, do you think I could2 that branch?" His father replied, "I am 3 you can, if you use all your 4."
The boy tried his best to lift or push the branch, but he wasn't 5 enough and he couldn't move it. He said with disappointment(失望), "You were 6, dad. I can't move it."
"Try again," replied his father.
Again, the boy tried 7 to push the branch.
He did his best but it stood 8. "Dad, I can't do it," said the boy. Finally, his father said, "Son, I9 you to use all your strength. But you didn't – you didn't ask for my 10 ."
Sometimes we don't use all our strength 11 we realize the strength and support of those who love and surround(围绕) us. Our real strength lies not in dependence , but in interdependence (互相依赖). No individual(单一的) person has all the strengths and resources 12 to do everything. That requires the joint (联合的) help of many people.
To ask for 13 when we need it is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of 14. If we're 15 when we ask for help, it just means we have to ask another time, another way, another person.

Did you watch The First Lesson on Sept 1? The popular CCTV show invites celebrities (名人) to teach kids lessons at the beginning of each new school year. But this year's show started with 13 minutes of advertising , causing a big stir (一片哗然) among students and parents.
But this probably won't happen again. A draft regulation (规定草案) for TV and other media programs that are aimed at children has been worked out by the National Radio and Television Administration. It is hoped that it will help children develop in a healthy way. The public is being asked for their opinions on it, The Paper reported.
The regulation says children's programming should not feature too many commercials (商业广告). It says there should be less than 12 minutes of advertising per hour.
There are also items (条目) in the draft related to programming content. For example, the promotion (宣传) of video games is not allowed. In advertisements for children under 14, the content should not be written in a way that "asks" parents to buy certain products.
This regulation was introduced because children lack (缺乏) the ability to tell right from wrong. They may be misled and blindly imitate (模仿) what they see in programs, the Beijing Youth Daily explained.
The regulation also protects child actors and actresses. According to the draft, children under 10 cannot be hired as advertising spokespeople (代言人).
What's more, the children of celebrities should not be hyped (炒作). Some of these children have been cyberbullied(网络欺凌) by internet users, which has influenced their healthy development.
Your third year of middle school was probably a tough and busy time. You may have had trouble getting enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health. But it has been found that less sleep could even cause you to have fewer friends.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don't get enough sleep are less willing to socialize (社交) with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night's sleep – as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants(参加者) watched videos of people with neutral (中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too "close" to them, they pushed a button (按钮) to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn't gotten enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded (侵占). But when the participants got a good night's sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are weird and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle (恶性循环).
So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. "One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident," Walker told the Daily Mail.
Making the most of time is important in our life. Here are some tips that might be of help to you.
Make a plan. You should make a plan every week. The plan includes things you want to finish. You should know what the most important ones are, and try your best to do them first.
⒈Control your stress. No matter what kind of stress you have, try to keep cool. When you have a lot of things to do, too much stress may make you slow. Don't work all day without breaks.
⒉Close your door. When working under a plan, do your important things with your door closed. This will give you a better-quality time.
⒊Focus on one thing at a time. Don't try to do many things at a time! You will lose your focus, and it will take you longer to finish your work.
⒋Just say "no". If you really don't have the time to help out, just say "no". You're only one person, and you can't save the world by yourself!
⒌Stop wasting time on the phone. While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short. In this way, you'll waste much less time.
⒍Relax. The most important thing is to take time to relax. Even if it's a 10-minute walk, get away from your work and get relaxed.

When I first arrived on this island, I had nothing. But I've found the ship and made a small boat. I've brought back many things I can use—food and drink, tools, knives and guns. Although I have lost everything, I have not lost my life. So I will not give up and I will wait for another ship. I have already cut down trees and built a house. I go out with my gun almost every day to kill animals and birds for food. I'm even learning to grow fruit and vegetables.
A few weeks ago, I found the marks of another man's feet on the sand. Who else is on my island? Not long after that, I saw some cannibals trying to kill two men from a broken ship. One of them died but the other ran towards my house. I helped him kill the cannibals. This man now lives with me and helps me. I named him Friday because that day was the day I met him. He is smart and I have already taught him some English.

When I walk down the street in Beijing during the summer, I often find it quite d to get where I'm going because there are all umbrellas in my way.
Before I come to China, I'd never seen people carrying umbrellas on s days. But in China, women carry umbrellas when it's not raining.
I found that there are many r for this. Firstly, it protects people a the sun's rays (光线). In summer, many Chinese cities get hot. People sometimes carry umbrellas to stay cool.
But wait a second. If umbrellas can help us stay cool, why haven't I ever seen men carrying t?
That brings us to the s reason – blocking the sun helps women's skin (皮肤) stay pale. In China, pale white skin is t to be more beautiful than tanned (晒成棕褐色的) skin. Cosmetics (化妆品) companies even sell special creams to make the skin l whiter.
However, in the US, women p to be tan. It's considered more beautiful there. Some people even lie outdoors in the sun for hours to get a tan. But doing this too much can be d, as the sun's rays are bad for the skin.
