It was the hottest day of the summer. I was driving along County Route 2, which went through the Sonoran Desert. Then I saw that a car had 1 down up ahead. It was the first car I'd seen in about half an hour. In the2, a few hundred feet ahead of the car, I saw a stooped(曲背的) figure 3 with a gas can in his hands. "There was nothing around for miles. There was no way this person going to 4it to the nearest town, which was a good twenty miles away, in this desert heat.
I'd always been told to stay away from 5, but I thought if there ever was a time to do a good deed, this was it. Besides, 6I neared the figure, I saw an elderly man. I thought there was little7that he'd do me any harm. Therefore, I slowed down and pulled over. "Need a 8?" I asked.
Now that I could see him clearly, it was 9 the old man was already in trouble. He'd only walked a hundred yards or so, and he looked as if he was going to pass out any moment. “I'd be most grateful, young lady, if you could help me get to a gas station,” he said slowly. “I seem to be out of petroleum.”
"No problem," I replied.
He 10 slowly into the car and kept silent for a few minutes while his body temperature normalized. I offered him a bottle of iced soda water. He accepted it 11. As we got close to the gas station, I asked him if he would like a ride back to his12. "I know it is 13your way," he paused. "And just where is your home, young lady?"
"Elmwood," I replied, "And my name is Emily. Emily Hampton. "
"You're a very kind lady, Ms. Hampton. My name is Edward Gilliam," said Edward.
Edward 14 up his gas can. Then I drove him back to his car and helped him pour the petrol into his tank(邮箱). After that I followed him back into 15just to make sure he was OK. At the gas station, we waved goodbye.
The next morning, the doorbell rang. I came down the stairs and saw a giant bouquet of flowers with small note16.
"Dearest Emily, thank you for your17yesterday. You just might have saved my life. You 18an old man of how much beauty there is in this world. "

Freedom of the press is rightly protected in most societies, yet it is just this protection that sometimes allows this freedom to be made bad use of. The press has a strong influence which can bring about significant changes to the lives of ordinary people. The story of the first quintuplets(五胞胎) in America clearly showed the power of the press.
There was a poor family living in Aberdeen, a small town in the U. S. A. Raising five children was already a struggle for the poor parents of this family. When the mother learned that it was another four girls and one more boy that were on the way, she and her husband were shocked beyond belief. Without a doubt, they were going to face even more urgent money problems.
However, this event changed their lives in ways they had never expected. The day after the birth of the five babies, there were sixty reporters and photographers waiting outside their door. The couple soon made national headlines, for they had become the parents of the first quintuplets in America.
The family gained fame and money overnight. Newspapers and magazines offered them huge sums of money for the rights to publish their stories as well as their photos. Gifts poured in not only from unknown people, but also from baby food and soap manufacturers who wanted to advertise their products. Though their lives were indeed improved, reporters kept pressing for interviews, which forced the family to hire lawyers to act as spokespeople for them at news conferences.
Moreover, the birth also brought great changes to Aberdeen. A new highway had been developed, since this town was likely to attract thousands of visitors. Even the name of the town on the road signs was changed to "Quint-City, U.S.A." Locals also discussed the possibility of setting up a "quint museum" to satisfy the curiosity of the public and to protect the family from gossipy visitors at the same time.
While the babies were still quietly sleeping in the hospital, their parents began paying the price for fame. It would never again be possible for them to lead normal lives. The town itself received so much attention that almost each of the locals there was affected more or less. This was the power of the press, but such power could easily be misapplied.
Looking out the window of his truck, Bob Fitzgerald sees large, undesirable plants growing in the fields. Visitors to his neighborhood around the Chesapeake Bay mainly see dying forests and empty farmland. Fitzgerald says the land has been in his family since the 17th century, and it has been sinking for hundreds of years. As sea levels rise salt water is entering rivers and other waterways. As a result, the ground is becoming too salty for crops to grow.
Around the world, scientists warn that coastal (沿海 ) farms are under threat from rising seas and salt water. A World Bank report predicts that rice production in coastal areas may fall by 15 percent by the year 2050. Another study found that hundreds of millions of people will be forced to move inland because of rising waters.
Kate Tully, an agroecologist(农业生态学家) wants to keep coastal farmers in business as the seas rise. The United States Department of Agriculture gave Tully and other researchers $ 1.1 million to study the problem. She and her team hope to give farmers ways to stay on their land. She told media that they are testing different crops on pieces of land around the coastal areas.
"Sorghum is my new favorite crop because it can grow without rain and it can grow with lots of rain. So this is actually a pretty good option." The grain crop may be a good choice to feed the nearly 600 million chickens raised in the area each year. As farmers know, chickens can deal with salt, dry weather conditions and heavy rains. Tally's group is also testing other kinds of grain and a few crops that they believe can grow in the salt.
Yet just being able to grow a crop is not enough. The crop has to be profitable. So an economist on the team will be looking at the numbers. But continuing to farm the land may not be the best plan of action. Some people believe the land should he given back to nature. They say the fields should be turned into wetlands, which are popular with duck hunters. "There's money in duck hunting," fully said. Hunting organizations will pay farmers for a permit to hunt on their land. Farmers could earn a lot of money from duck hunters, she said.
Tully and her team are just getting started. It will be a few years before they really understand how to save the farms.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting. I left my cell phone at home, so I went hack to get it,” Adam said as he apologized to Vicky after arriving an hour late for their first date. Vicky tried to be polite, so she forced a smile and replied, “It's all right. Let's order something to eat.” While they were waiting for their food. Vicky discovered that Adam had been checking his cell phone. Just as she got the chance to talk to him Adam's cell phone rang and he answered it without delay. He talked continuously and totally ignored his date, who was sitting right next to him. Twenty minutes later, when Adam finally hung up and turned hack to Vicky, he saw nothing but an angry face. “Why don't you date your cell phone?” said Vicky. Then, she stood up and shouted, “Don't ever call me again!”
We can understand why Vicky was so angry at Adam. In fact, like Adam, many people in modern society can't stand to be separated from their cell phones. With their cell phones, they talk to others, listen to music, check e-mall, and download applications as well as photos. Their dependence on this technological device has become so great that the cell phone is now often considered a necessity rather than a luxury (奢侈品). Some people cannot even imagine life without their cell phones. As a result, a psychological(心理学的) phrase known as "disconnect anxiety" was born.
According to psychologists, when these people are not using their phones, they may start to feel uneasy. Some feel socially separated without their cell phone. Others worry about not being able to respond to emergencies in time. Still others are so psychologically influenced by their cell phones that they often believe their phones have been ringing without their knowledge. Those who suffer from disconnect anxiety frequently check their cell phones for any missed calls or messages. In addition, they like to keep in touch with their friends-even just to kill time. What's more, if these heavy cell phone users discover that they have forgotten to bring their cell phones along with them, they will insist on returning home to get their "cells".
It's nice to have a cell phone, and it makes sense, of course, to enjoy all the advantages this clever product has brought. However, we need to use it wisely. For example, when we are doing something important, we should turn off our cell phones to concentrate on our work. As for Adam, he had better leave his cell phone at home on his next date with Vicky-if he gets another chance to go out with her!

People may wonder different words are used to describe these four countries England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this questionyou study British history.
First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag the Union Jack.

In a study, those ate more organic food had fewer cancers. The study that followed 70,000 , most of them women, for five years has reported that the most frequent consumers of organic food had 25 percent fewer cancers than the people who never ate organic. The women who ate the most organic fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat and other foods had a big drop in breast cancers. People who buy organic food that it's better for their health, and they're willing to pay clearly for it.
However, some scientists noted the study did not prove an organic diet would cause a reduction in cancers and called for more long-term government-funded studies to confirm the results. They hold the view evidence of the benefits of eating organic has been lacking, and it is more important for people to simply eat more fruits and vegetables whether the produce is organic or not, if they want to prevent cancer.

When people talk about the future, we like to think that we will be able to drive out of our garages and take to the skies in our own personal flying car. The advantages are obvious. Some people predict this technology complete freedom of movement. We could fly at 480 kilometres per hour, traffic lights, busy roads and speeding tickets. However, some people point to the disadvantages of flying cars. They say that there are certain to be problems with traffic control. Another big problem is engine. What will happen if the car goes wrong? Also, if they become popular, there is to be another big problem: air traffic jam. So we may find flying cars with more than a few problems if they are to get off the ground!
