The “green” car has become popular in recent yearsA green car is an environmentally friendly car. Today, most cars are powered by petrol. They make our life easier. But cars have also made problems for the environment.

There are a few new types of cars that use no petrol or a little petrol.

Electric cars: This kind of car uses a battery for power. When you're not driving it, just plug it in like a mobile phone to power up the battery. They don't make exhaust (排放物).But car makers still can't make a battery that lasts for more than a few hours. That's why electric cars aren91 very popular.

Fuel cell cars (燃料电池车):Fuel cell cars use hydrogen and oxygen to make power. The only exhaust they produce is clean water. But fuel cell cars are still much too expensive to make.

Solar cars: This kind of car has large panels on the top that take power from the sunshine. The car holds that power in a battery. Solar cars might be the cleanest of all. But no one uses them, because solar panels can't get enough power from the Sun to make a car go for a long timeAlso, they are very slow.

Hybrid cars (油电混合车):This kind of car is the most exciting kind, because it is very clean and not too expensive. The hybrid car is very smart: Half the time, it uses petrol, and half the time it uses a battery. So, when the petrol engine is working, it puts some of its power back into the battery. It uses much less petrol than other cars. It also makes less pollution for the environment.

    (1) What does a “green” car mean from the passage?

A . A “green” car is a car which uses no petrol at all. B . A “green” car is good for the environment. C . A “green” car is often powered by petrol. D . A “green” car uses a battery for power.
    (2) How many “green” cars without using petrol does the writer tell us?

    A . Four. B . Three. C . Two. D . One.
    (3) Which of the following cars are probably the most popular?

    A . Hybrid cars. B . Solar cars. C . Fuel cell  cars. D . Electric cars.
    (4) What is the purpose of the passage?

A . To ask us to buy these “green” cars. B . To ask us to protect the environment. C . To introduce some “green” cars to us. D . To encourage us to make our life easier.

Many people have tried to simplify (简化) the spelling of English words. Unlike other languages, English sometimes spells the same sounds in very different ways. For example, there is “light” but “white”, “loan” but “phone”, and there are at least seven different ways of pronouncing “ough”, “though”, “through”, “bough”, “cough”, “enough”, “ought” and “thorough”.

The American President Theodore Roosevelt almost succeeded in simplifying English spelling. In 1906, one of the richest men in the United States of America, Andrew Carnegie, started the Simplified Spelling Board whose plan was to make the spelling of words nearer to the way they sound. For example, the word “though” would be spelt “though” and “through” would become “thru”. Other people on the board were Melvil Dewey, the head of the New York libraries, and Professor Brander Matthews of Columbia University. They explained their idea to President Roosevelt who thought that it was indeed logical (合理的).He immediately instructed the government printer to use simplified spelling in all government letters.

But people did not like the change — even if it made life easier— and the new, simpler spelling was not popular. More importantly, when the American politicians discussed the plan, they did not like it either. Because Roosevelt did not want to have any problems with the politicians, he changed his mind and told the printer to go back to the old way of spelling.

Since then no one in any government has dared to simplify English spelling. However, people do simplify some words, mainly in advertisements. For example, we often see “tonite” instead of “tonight” and “thru” instead of “through”.

    (1) What does the first paragraph tell us?

A . Why people have tried to simplify the spelling. B . How people have tried to simplify the spelling. C . When people have tried to simplify the spelling. D . Who have tried to simplify the spelling.
    (2) What's the RIGHT order of the events?

① Simplified spelling speared in government letters.

②  American politicians talked about the plan.

③ Simplified Spelling Board was founded.

④ Roosevelt gave up simplifying the spelling.

    A . ①④②③ B . ②③①④ C . ②④③① D . ③①②④
    (3) What do you probably think of the process of simplifying the spelling?

A . No one understood it. B . It made life confusing. C . It was unsuccessful at last. D . It was welcomed by people.
    (4) What is the passage mainly about?

A . The American President Theodore Roosevelt. B . A group of people who tried to simplify English spelling. C . The way that advertisements simplify spelling. D . A government printer who used simplified spelling.
